It's best to search using the Guided Keywords search option.
Until now, the subject term for indigenous Australians has been
Aborigines, Australian. This is about to be replaced by
Aboriginal
Australians.
Until the new term is definitely in place we suggest you search this
way.
1. In guided keyword , enter these search terms in the
first search box:
aborigin? australia? (and to the right choose :
All of these)
2. In the second search box use one of the terms or phrases
as suggested below, according to your essay topic, again selecting Search
by: Any keywords.

OR

and
government? policy (any of these)
ASSIMILATION POLICIES
It is important to remember that attitudes and policies towards
the indigenous people, up to the late 1960s, was assimilationist.
So, most of what was written up until then reflects that outlook, but will
not necessarily be found using the literal search term "assimilation".
You will get a useful by searching for some of the headings listed
above and then sorting your results by publication date. You
will be able to see from the titles the change in attitudes over time.

OTHER BARR SMITH LIBRARY RESOURCES
The library's Special
Collections has considerable resources including the Daisy Bates papers.
They are listed in the catalogue and documented in the publication
Guide to the Special Collections of the Barr Smith Library.
PARLIAMENTARY PUBLICATIONS
Parliamentary debates (Hansard) record what was actually said in
Parliament, and as such are a rich source for historical research.
Parliamentary papers publish reports that are tabled in Parliament.
These can be individual reports on an issue or the annual reports of
state or commonwealth officials or departments .
There are indexes for each parliamentary session either at the beginning
or the end of the volumes and there are also separately published indexes
which are shelved in the Reference Collection.
Parliamentary
publications in the Barr Smith Library: a finding list will assist
you in finding these items.
