STUDIES IN
AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS ART

This is a guide to library and information resources for the postgraduate Art History program,
which has been developed jointly by the
Department of History at Adelaide University and the Art Gallery of South Australia

The Barr Smith Library holds a more than adequate collection of books, journals and reference tools on art, but for in-depth research it may be necessary to consult the libraries of Adelaide's other two universities, Flinders and University of South Australia (Underdale campus), both of which have very good art collections. You can borrow from the other two university libraries with your UofA card. The State Library also often holds useful titles
All their catalogues can be consulted from here and reciprocal borrowing can be arranged.
Australia-wide locations for books can be searched using Libraries Australia (Kinetica)

Journals not held by the BSL can be located on the database
Serials in Australian Libraries (SIAL).
In that database, a library location code beginning with an S is a South Australian location.

The Library of the Art Gallery of South Australia should be consulted as a last resort

For any further help in finding or using these resources please come in to see or contact your Research Librarian for History, ph. 83033706
Margaret Hosking  ph. 83033706....margaret.hosking@adelaide.edu.au

I am now located on level 2, in the wedge between the 800's and the 900's.
Reference collection is now on level 2 north, in the foyer outside the Barr Smith Readig Room.
Special Collections is now on level 1 south.
For microforms use the REQUEST option in the library catalogue and select "Joint store and Intercampus request".

SUMMON AND THE CATALOGUE

The Summon search box on the library'as home page will search across online and print articles and books.
It is good for quick searches but sometimes yields too many results and lacks the refinement of subject searching in the catalogue or a database.
Its subject terms are different from the catalogue's subject headings or the terms used in Historical Abstracrs with full text.

It is a good way to go straight to a specific journal article with a minimum of clicks.

For more specific searching use the library catalogue.

To search the catalogue, use Guided Keyword
and try the following in the Any Keywords option :
Aborigin? artist?
Aboriginal Australians material culture
Aboriginal Australians Antiquities
Aborigin? Cultural property
Rock paintings
Bark painting

Also, adding the search term video? can be useful:
Aborig? artist? videorecording

Search also using Guided keyword , and search by Subject Heading option:
Aboriginal Australians art

The official subject heading is:
Art, Aboriginal Australian.........browse

Indigenous art can be found at a few Dewey numbers:
306.0899915, 704.039915, 709.94, 759.994
Please go to the catalogue first as you may miss some titles by merely browsing in the collection.
