JSTOR is a full text searchable library of journals (mainly in the social sciences and humanities) which contains full content of selected journals from their first issue up to 3-5 years ago

Project Muse
full text  access to University Press and other scholarly electronic journals in the social sciences, humanities etc  since the mid 1990's.You can even search by LC subject, same as you do in the catalogue

Periodicals Index Online (PIO)
A database of millions of articles published in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Coverage goes back 300 years, so it is very useful for finding articles from history journals over the past 100 years.
From the PIO results screen there is a link to Periodicals Archive Online which provides access to the full text of hundreds of journals. Otherwise, many of the older journals are held either in the BSL or State Library - check catalogues.

This database has over 60,000 images of original manuscripts and printed material linked to essays by leading scholars in the field of Empire Studies, with links to the documentary evidence provided. Covers Africa, the Americas, Australasia, Oceania and South Asia. Can be searched by names, topics and places. Areas covered include:
Cultural Contacts, 1492-1969; Empire Writing and the Literature of Empire; The Visible Empire; Religion and Empire; Race, Class and Colonialism, c1783-1969 .

PRIMARY SOURCES

Searching the library catalogue for primary sources

Primary sources are documents written at the time of the event.
They can include letters, newspapers, cartoons,  memoirs (personal narratives), treaties and other documents.

The two simplest ways to locate them are:

via the catalogue, adding the word sources to your subject search
e.g. France  Colonies  Administration  Sources
      Great Britain  Colonies  Adminstration  Sources

or,
via specialised websites, where documents on a particular topic may be grouped together. Some examples are listed below:

Contemporary Newspapers and journals

Periodicals Index Online (PIO)  Searches for journal articles published over more than 300 years. Great for contemporary accounts of events if you limit searches to time periods.
