Library exercise qu 2 & 3.

The library holds many useful books for these topics.
Searching the catalogue is the way to find them.
Go to either basic search and use the subject headings or select the guided keyword search tab and use some of the subject heading terms in the first search box and some extra keywords fom the main concepts involved in the question in the second box.
Keyword searches will look for your terms in contents lists and chapters of books (qu 3)

Historical abstracts 1967-
DOES NOT COVER AMERICAN HISTORY, BUT WILL COVER EMPIRES ETC
Essential to search for articles in History journals. Now has many links to full text articles.
Advanced search options - scroll down the page for time period, language etc or click on Indexes (white word on green bar at the topof the page) for subject, author etc.

Academic OneFile 1980-
Accesss to more than 20 million peer-reviewe articles, a large proportion of which are
full-text, from more than 8000 journals across all subject areas.

Academic Search Premier
Full text for over 4000 of the 8000 journals aross all subject a reas.

JSTOR
is a full text searchable library of scholarly journals (mainly in the social sciences and humanities) which contains full content of selected journals from their first issue up to 3-5 years ago - so not current.

Finding primary sources and Websites

Library exercise qu 8.

Primary sources are documents that date from the time of the original event.....diaries, news stories, government documents, letters.
If you are very lucky, you may find an originals, but they are also reproduces in many formats - on the www, collected and published in books etc.Depending on your topic, they can be located in a number of ways:

Writings of people who were there.....look in the library catalogue using the nams as AUTHOR....eg Columbus, Christopher etc.

Using one of the subject terms (above) and adding the word SOURCES to your search:

Many resources have been put on the www.
Some collections have been paid for by the library and their contents are listed in our catalogue as electronic resources. eg

A portal for slavery and abolition studies, bringing together documents and collections covering an extensive time period 1490-2007, from libraries and archives across the Atlantic world.

Early modern resources
A website for early modern history resources created by Sharon Howard, while she was a PhD student at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth. Links to topics including old and new worlds, society, economy, demography, women, gender, sexuality, religion, science, crime, literature, and music. In a section entitled "Representing Early Modernity" one can find good links to the works of many historians who have contributed to and continue to influence historiographical debate.
