GENERAL INFORMATION SOURCES FOR ALL TOPICS

More specific resources are listed further down this web page,
under headings for the course's
MAIN TOPICS

It is a good idea to read broadly at first, to get the "big picture", using books found via the catalogue and also verify definitions of concepts using reference works.

CATALOGUE

To find some more books, use the catalogue.
Here are some subject headings to start with.
Subject headings often don't use the same terms as your topics, so think of synonyms, or do a keyword search, find some useful titles, and then look for the subject headings (in blue) which have been added to that book's cataloguing information.

FINDING JOURNAL ARTICLES

Individual journal articles are not usually listed in the library catalogue.
If you want
to find journal articles on a particular topic , you need to search electronic databases. You can search using subject, keyword or author's name.
We do not necessarily hold all the journal titles and articles covered by these databases, but
many have links to full text articles and some are linked to software that will search our catalogue to see if we have access to the journal in print or online.

Historical abstracts 1967-
Essential for a thorough search for articles in History journals. Covers all history except for the Americas.
For American history use:

America History and Life

Academic OneFile       1980-
A broad multidisciplinary database, providing full text for a large proportion of the 8000 journals covered.

Academic Search Premier
This database covers 8000 journals from all subject areas, and provides the full text of articles from over 4000 of those journals

JSTOR is a full text searchable library of scholarly journals (mainly in the social sciences and humanities) which contains full content of selected journals from their first issue up to 3-5 years ago. Use the Advanced Search option.

Project Muse offers full text of articles from nearly 250 quality journal titles from 40 scholarly publishers. It includes the field of history and many others, acrosss the social sciences and humanities. Coverage is from about 5 years ago to current, which nicely complements the older issues in JSTOR.

PRIMARY SOURCES

Primary sources are documents written at the time of the event.
They include letters, newspapers, cartoons, parliamentary papers, memoirs (personal narratives), treaties and other documents.
The two simplest ways to locate them are:
via the catalogue, adding to your subject heading search any of the following terms:
sources, or diaries or personal narratives or memory; OR

via specialised websites, where documents on a particular topic may be grouped together. Some usful websites are listed below.
Look under the TOPIC GROUPS for details.
