FINDING JOURNAL ARTICLES
Some of these will locate secondary articles which interpret events (and are published after the fact), but JSTOR and Periodicals Index Online searches can be limited to the time period of the events being studied. eg 1930-1939 for contemporary coverage.

is a full text searchable library of scholarly journals
(mainly in the social sciences and humanities) which contains full
content of selected journals from their first issue up to 3-5 years
ago.

Project Muse gives searchable full-text access to
University Press and other scholarly electronic journals in the
social sciences, humanities etc. 1998-
Periodicals Index Online (PIO) Searches for journal articles published over more than 200 years.Limited search terms - usually titles of articles.
Great for contemporary accounts of 20th century events if you limit searches to time periods.
Some full text available.

Factiva provides full text and indexing of hundreds of
worldwide newspapers,
mostly from the 1990's onwards, but the New York
