How to find journal articles and other references

Individual journal articles are not usually listed in the library catalogue.
Indexing and abstracting databases list articles under various topics and can be searched  using  subject and keyword.  These databases can be searched via the www  in the Library, student computer facilities in the  library or faculty, or from home.
Journal articles may also be found by using printed bibliographies.

The view from Australia:

For a thorough search for journal articles on a specific topic, from the most recent backwards, go through the following reference tools in the order given:

1. APA-FT  Australian public affairs - full text  Citations 1978- and full text for selected articles 1995-
2. Reference Collection 994.0016 AI38
Index to journal articles on Australian history for 1974-1988
3. Reference Collection  994.0016  I38
Index to journal articles on Australian history, comp.T. Hogan.1976? Covers to 1973.
4. Reference Collection  994.005 A93
Australian public affairs information service (APAIS) no.1 1945-
Great for older, contemporary articles from the 1940's to the 1970's across many topics.

These other Australian databases may also be useful:
ATI (Australian Tourism Index)
AUSPORT (Australian Sport Database)
FAMILY (Australian Family & Society Abstracts)
MAIS (Multicultural Australia and Immigration Studies)

AustLit : the Australian literature gateway

Reference Collection 994.0016 C761
Contemporary Australian issues. 1993-94
A collection  of bibliographies covering topics such as Racism & the immigration debate, Women in the Church,  Australia's role in the Asia-Pacific region,  Foreign aid, etc. etc.

Academic Search Premier 1985-

Project Muse  gives  full text  access to University Press and other scholarly electronic journals in the social sciences, humanities etc  since the mid 1990's.

Periodicals archive online (PAO)

International but soemAustrlaian coverage. Searches can be limited to time periods to find contemporary sources and comment on issues.

PARLIAMENTARY PUBLICATIONS

The library has a guide entitled Parliamentary publications in the Barr Smith Library.
There is lots of useful information in the Australian section of our guide, including call numbers for finding the debates etc in the 320's on level  1 of the library.
Parliamentary debates (Hansard) record what was actually said in Parliament, and as such are a rich source for historical research. Parliamentary papers publish reports that are tabled in Parliament. These can be individual reports on an issue or the annual reports of state or commonwealth officials or departments. There are indexes for each parliamentary session either at the beginning or the end of the volumes and there are also separately published indexes listed in the booklet which are shelved in the Reference Collection.
Parliament of Australia is on the www and you can search  the debates in the House of Representatives (Hansard) 2005 to 1981 and of the Senate 1981-2005.
