Film/Video
Here I have identified material concerning film and video from a media point of view. You'll find lots more material on film from a creative/artistic point of view on the English resources website - go to the Australian and international film resources page.
Websites
- General Film/Video resources
- Lots of relevant links from the Voice of the Shuttle website.
- Film theory
- Another useful page from the Voice of the Shuttle website.
- Cinemedia
- Describes itself as 'the Internet's largest film & media directory'. Claims to have over 25,000 links; that's probably true but they are simply listed alphabetically with no annotations to indicate content and you'll find many of them are broken. That said, it's worth exploring headings such as Research and Production; there are gems to be found if you dig hard enough.
- MediaRights
- MediaRights is a community organization dedicated to maximizing the impact of social-issue documentaries and shorts. We help adult and youth filmmakers reach audiences, educators and librarians bring films into their curricula and nonprofits and activists integrate media into their campaigns.
- Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)
- From the wonders of more than a century of cinema, to television, computer games and the screen-based art of the future, ACMI is the place to find out everything about the moving image.
- Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS)
- AFTRS is Australia's national screen arts and broadcast school and enjoys strong political and industry support.
AFTRS production, research and collaborative activities contribute directly to the nation's creative economy. The school is focused on continuing to nurture and launch the careers of the next generation of Australian screen story tellers and audio visual practitioners.
- National Film and Television School
- The National Film and Television School is the UK's national centre of excellence for postgraduate education.
- Film Education
- Film Education provides free resources and services to support the importance of media education in the (UK) National Curriculum. Supported by the UK film industry, it organises educational training courses and produces study guides and videos.
- MediaEd
- MediaEd is the site for media and moving image education in the UK. On this site you'll find teaching ideas, lesson plans and project reports, examples of student work, details of where you can get support and training or find workshops or education screenings.
Pleae note that MediaEd is about media and moving image education in schools, communities, informal and adult education. It's not about training people to work in the media industry, and it doesn't cover the academic study of films and the media in higher education.
But there is still some useful information to be found on the site.
Print material
To find books on film making you'll need to use the Subject Heading Cinematography. Books on film as an art form are found under Motion pictures, but many of these will also be useful for Media research.
Dictionaries and encyclopedias
The Library has a good collection of reference works on film. Many are concerned with flm as an art form, but you'll also find that quite a number of them contain material that is relevant to media research.
- Cinema studies: the key concepts
