Definitions

Environmental ethics is a relatively new discipline that analyses the issues regarding our moral obligations to future generations with respect to the environment.

Environmental ethics
From the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. A definition followed by a long article, concluding with a valuable Bibliography.

You'll find useful background articles in the following titles in the Barr Smith Library Reference collection. Read them for an overview of the topic. The articles also include bibliographies of further reading - very useful if you want to follow up a specific topic.

Encyclopedia of ethics
Volume 1 (2nd edition) has a long article on 'Environmental ethics', with a bibliography for further reading, on pages 467 to 471. You'll find other relevant articles in the encyclopedia under headings such as 'Conservation ethics'.

Encyclopedia of applied ethics
Have a look at the chapter 'Environmental ethics overview' in volume 2, pages 73-81. The following chapters, 'Environmental impact assessment' and 'Environmental justice', also contain useful background information and you'll find more information in other sections of the encyclopedia under 'Development ethics', 'Ecological balance' and 'Sustainability'.

Ethics, edited by John K. Roth
There's a good article 'Environmental ethics' in volume 1, starting on page 450, and other articles you might look at include 'Environmental movement', 'Environmental Protection Agency' and 'Gaia hypothesis'. All articles have handy lists of Further reading.

National Library for the Environment
'A universal, timely, and easy-to-use single-point entry to environmental information and data for the use of all participants in the environmental enterprise' maintained by the National Council for Science and the Environment.
Their searchable Online References are an excellent resource.

Center for Environmental Philosophy
The Center for Environmental Philosophy site is 'dedicated to providing access to Internet resources throughout the world which pertain to or focus on environmental ethics and environmental philosophy'.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility
GBIF is an international organisation that is working to make the world's biodiversity data accessible everywhere in the world. Their Data Portal provides enables you to find data for a species or other group of organisms, or on the species recorded in a particular country. You can also Find data on the species recorded in a particular country.
For an indication of the wealth of material available, have a look at the Australian data.

International Association for Environmental Philosophy
IAEP embraces a broad understanding of environmental philosophy, including not only environmental ethics, but also environmental aesthetics, ontology, and theology, the philosophy of science, ecofeminism, and the philosophy of technology.

The Online Gadfly
Subtitled: News and Opinion Regarding Moral Philosophy, Environmental Ethics & Public Policy.
This website contains an occasional original essay, an assortment of papers (published and in progress), news and notes, bibliographies and other research tools, and much more, most of these pertaining to issues in environmental ethics, politics and public policy.

Environmental ethics
A directory of unannotated links to general environmental ethics Web resources and to sites dealing with such specific issues as genetic engineering, nanotechnology, cloning, resource allocation, animals and vegetarianism, pollution, radiation, global warming, population, indigenous peoples, and teaching about environmental ethics. Compiled by Ron Epstein, a San Francisco State University philosophy professor.

EnviroLink Network
'EnviroLink is a non-profit organization... a grassroots online community that unites hundreds of organizations and volunteers around the world with millions of people in more than 150 countries. EnviroLink is dedicated to providing comprehensive, up-to-date environmental information and news.'
The site includes a very useful Advanced search function.

Journals

Electronic Green Journal
The main goal of the Electronic Green Journal is to assist in international scholarly environmental communication by providing a quality, unbiased, and freely accessible forum for the exchange of environmental information as an alternative to costly, commercially produced scientific journals. The EGJ is one of the first peer-reviewed digital journals promoting an open access publishing model. Since its inception in July of 1994, the journal has allowed all Internet users unrestricted access to original articles and book reviews on international environmental topics.
The Electronic Green Journal is fully searchable and is published semiannually by the University of Idaho Library.

The International Society for Environmental Ethics Newsletter
All issues from volume 1 (1990) are available. The Newsletter is not indexed but you can use the 'Find' function of your browser to search the contents of individual issues.

Environmental ethics bibliography
The International Society for Environmental Ethics Master Bibliography indexes the major environmental ethics journals (the list of titles indexed is on a separate page). You can search the bibliography directly through a search box or you can download it as a pdf file.
Most of the articles include an abstract.

The Library subscribes to two major environmental ethics journals. They are online and available to currently enrolled students and staff members of the University of Adelaide.

Full text is available from volume 1 Issue 2 (October 1998) to one year ago (our licence precludes access to the last twelve months' issues).

Discussion groups

enviroethics@JISCMAIL.AC.UK
This discussion forum for environmental ethics was set up by the National Academic Mailing List Service (JISCmail) in 1994. The site houses an archive of all information and messages sent to the list from 1998 onwards. Posts include conference announcements and calls for papers, short articles, and relevant news items. Searches can be conducted using the user-friendly facility provided. The archives are publicly available, but posting to the list and accessing some other areas of the site requires registration. Information is provided about how to join, leave, post to, and manage the list.
