Reference works for philosophy
Websites
- Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy
- Articles in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy are short summaries of topics, generally unsigned, and do not include a bibliography. They are currently from three sources (1) adaptations from public domain sources, (2) adaptations from student
papers, and (3) original contributions by professional philosophers.
If you need a very basic background to a topic, look here. Better though, would be to use one of the works in the Barr Smith Library's Reference collection - have a look at classification number 103, or come and talk to me.
- Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
- The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is a dynamic encyclopedia: each entry is updated and maintained by an expert or group of experts in the field. Unlike static reference works which are fixed on the printed page or on CD-ROM, this document constantly changes with the addition of new entries and the modification of existing entries.
The above link is to the Sydney mirror site; if you can't connect, try the
direct link to Stanford.
- A Dictionary of Philosophical Terms and Names
- A concise guide to technical terms and personal names. Although the entries are often brief, many include links to electronic texts and to more detailed discussions in other online resources.
