Databases for Computer Science

Back to: Computer Science Resources

This guide to computer science databases can be used to find journal articles and other publications on  computer science topics. Use of most databases is governed by licence agreements which restrict access to members of the University of Adelaide community, for purposes of non-commercial research, education or personal use. On computers outside the University network, you will be prompted for your Library barcode.

ABSTRACTS & INDEXES

ACM Digital Library
Citations and full-text of ACM articles from journals, magazines, and conference proceedings. Access to the full-text is available to the staff and students of the University of Adelaide. See contents of the Digital Library for the titles included. When you are searching for information, you should search "The Guide" as it is a collection of bibliographic citations and abstracts of works published by ACM and other publishers. Citations for all ACM published works are included in the Guide as a small subset of the total bibliographic space.
CiteSeer.IST . Scientific Literature Digital Library
CiteSeer is a scientific literature digital library and search engine that focuses primarily on the literature in computer and information science. CiteSeer attempts to provide algorithms, metadata, services, techniques, and software that can be used in other digital libraries. CiteSeer indexes PostScript and PDF research articles on the Web. Summary of CiteSeer.
The Collection of Computer Science Bibliographies
This is a collection of bibliographies of scientific literature in computer science from various sources, covering most aspects of computer science.
Compendex, 1884-
Covers journals, technical reports and hard to find conferences in engineering. From 1990-present, abstracts are included and can be searched by keywords.
Inspec , 1898-
Covers scientific and technical journals and conference proceedings in physics, electrical engineering and electronics, computing and control, and information technology. Updated weekly.
MathSciNet, 1940-
It has a very comprehensive coverage of pure mathematics. Covers international research literature in mathematics and related areas including computer science.
Academic OneFile, 1980-
It is an interdisciplinary index to journal literature from 1980 to the present. Coverage is very broad. The full text of articles is available for many of the journals indexed.

CITATION INDEXES

Citation indexes are useful to follow up an author in your field of interest to see how his/her work have been used by later scholars/researchers.

Web of Science, 1980-
It is useful for searching for articles that have cited a given article and which are therefore assumed to be on a related topic. It can also be searched by topic but lacks the depth of indexing of databases like ACM Digital Library. Web of Science includes abstracts; the standalone version does not. The database covers all areas of science.
A companion, Journal Citation Reports is a comprehensive, and unique resource for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from scholarly and technical journals worldwide. It gives rankings and impact factors for multidisciplinary and international journals

Scopus, 1996- and some earlier

Like Web of Science it covering science and other subjects and allowing cited reference searching for articles that have cited a given article. The 1980 onwards date range of Web of science makes it the more useful for cited reference searching.
Both databases can also be searched by topic, author, etc.

CURRENT AWARENESS INDEXES

Many databases and electronic journals provide a free alerting service that will send updated results of a research topic search or tables of contents of a new journal issue to your email address or use RSS feeds (what's this?) to distribute the information

Other servers similarly give pre-publication or at-publication notification of journal articles:

DISSERTATION INDEXES

Dissertations are not usually included in regular indexing services hence the need for the following databases. Note that there is no current index to Australian theses.
Dissertation Abstract, 1861-
The complete range of academic subjects appearing in dissertations accepted at accredited institutions. Updated monthly. Mainly North American Institution.
Index To Theses
This database covers theses from the U.K. and Ireland accepted from 1970 to 1999.
Australian Digital Theses Program
The aim of the ADT program is to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the  postgraduate research students at Australian universities. The theses will be available worldwide via the web. The ideal behind the program is to provide access to, and promote Australian research to the international community.
Adelaide University is a member of the Australian Digital Theses Program. Click here for more information on Adelaide's involvement.

TECHNICAL REPORTS

Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library
An international collection of computer science research reports and papers made available for non-commercial use from a number of participating institutions and archives. Some of the documents in NCSTRL (Networked Computer Science Technical Reference Library) are part of the technical report collections of participating institutions. For the most part, NCSTRL institutions are universities that grant PhDs in Computer Science or Engineering, with some industrial or government research laboratories. Other documents are contents of other document archives that participate in the NCSTRL technical infrastructure.

GOVERNMENT RESEARCH REPORTS

Government Reports Announcements And Index, 1971-1996
Reference Collection 505 G715.2
An index to United States government-funded scientific, technical,
engineering, and business related publications.
NTIS orderNow catalog, 1990-  is the web version.
