Summary of mathematical functions that arise in physical and engineering problems. Contains numerical tables, graphs, polynomial of rational approximations for computers and statements of the principal mathematical properties of the tabulated functions, particularly those of computational importance. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the use of the tables and also the computation of function values which lie outside their range.
A project of the Digital Library of Mathematical Functions is in the planning stage at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (as NBS was renamed in 1988) to develop a replacement for the Handbook. This will be a major new mathematical reference source on the World Wide Web for special functions and their applications.
