Databases for Mathematics

This guide to mathematical databases can be used to find journal articles and other publications on mathematical topics. Use of most databases is governed by licence agreements which restrict access to members of the University of Adelaide community, for purposes of non-commercial research, education or personal use. On computers outside the University network, you will be prompted for your Library barcode.

ABSTRACTS &  INDEXES

MathSciNet, 1940-
Available via the web through the American Mathematical Society and is only available to University of Adelaide staff and students. It has a very comprehensive coverage of pure mathematics. Full reference lists from original items are now available in MathSciNet. Lists have been added initially from 65 journals, covering material published since January 2000. This enable you to search for citing authors and hence can be used as a citation index to complement the Web of Science.
The Jahrbuch Project: Electronic Research Archive for Mathematics (ERAM)
The project provides a digital archive of the most important mathematical publications of the period
1868-1942 and a database based on the "Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik"

The intention of the JFM Project is to create a digital library for classical mathematics in the World Wide Web. It consists of a complete electronic catalogue of the mathematical publications in the time period between 1868 - 1942 (JFM database) and a digital archive storing the most relevant publications from that period. The two components are linked very closely.

Zentralblatt Fur Mathematik Und Ihre Grenzgebiete, 1931-1996
Reference Collection 510.5 Z41 1973- 1996
Main Collection 510.5 Z41 1931-1973
Comprehensive coverage of pure mathematics, with a section on statistics.

CITATION INDEXES

Citation indexes are useful to follow up an author in your field of interest to see how his/her work have been used by later scholars/researchers.
Web of Science, 1980-

It is useful for searching for articles that have cited a given article and which are therefore assumed to be on a related topic. It can also be searched by topic but lacks the depth of indexing of databases like MathScinet. Web of Science includes abstracts. The database covers all areas of science.

A companion,  Journal Citation Reports is a comprehensive, and unique resource for  journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from  scholarly and technical journals worldwide. It gives rankings and impact factors for multidisciplinary and international journals

Scopus, 1996- and some earlier

Like Web of Science it covers science and other subjects and allowing cited reference searching for articles that have cited a given article. The 1980 onwards date range of Web of science makes it the more useful for cited reference searching.
Both databases can also be searched by topic, author, etc.

CURRENT AWARENESS INDEXES

Many databases and electronic journals provide a free alerting service that will send updated results of a research topic search or tables of contents of a new journal issue to your email address or use RSS feeds (what's this?) to distribute the information .

Other servers similarly give pre-publication or at-publication notification of journal articles:

DISSERTATION INDEXES

Dissertations are not usually included in regular indexing services hence the need for the following databases. Note that there is no current index to Australian theses.
ProQuest dissertations and theses, 1861-
The complete range of academic subjects appearing in dissertations accepted at accredited institutions. Updated monthly. Mainly North American Institution.
Index To Theses, 1970-
This database covers theses from the U.K. and Ireland accepted from 1970 to 1999.
Australian Digital Theses Program
The aim of the ADT program is to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the  postgraduate research students at Australian universities. The theses will be available worldwide via the web. The ideal behind the program is to provide access to, and promote Australian research to the international community.

GOVERNMENT RESEARCH REPORTS

Government Reports Announcements and Index, 1971-1996
Reference Collection 505 G715.2
An index to United States government-funded scientific, technical,
engineering, and business related publications.
NTIS orderNow catalog, 1990-  is the web version.

JOURNAL HOLDINGS IN AUSTRALIA

Libraries Australia
Lists the journals held by major libraries in Australia including academic and public libraries.

CONFERENCE INDEXES

Conference papers are often difficult to identify and locate. The following indexes may be useful.
The Electronic Library of Mathematics: Mathematical Conference Proceedings
Electronic versions of conference proceedings.
Proceedings of Conferences - Electronic Journal of Differential Equations
