Filling The Shelves

The University of Adelaide Dental School has a long and distinguished history of teaching and research and is recognized both nationally and internationally as a leading school in the development of modern, clinically relevant dental courses. Graduates are highly regarded and are sought after in the market place Australia wide as effective dental practitioners. To maintain this standard students and staff of the Dental School must have access to the very best resources available.  In past years this was the case, however increasing journal prices, static materials budgets, and foreign exchange rates compelled The Barr Smith Library to reduce subscriptions to important dental journals.

So concerned were a group of committed University staff and dental professionals that in 2003 they launched an appeal to restore journal access to the students and staff of the Dental School as a matter of urgency. In excess of $100,000 will be required to retain essential journals such as The British Dental Journal, The Journal of The American Dental Association, Quintessence International and The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry for the next 10 years and to fit out a dedicated room in the Dental School for convenient electronic access to journals, and to house the donated book collection.

If the appeal receives 200 pledges of $100 a year for 5 years, we will achieve our goal. All donations and pledges worth $500 or more over five years will receive recognition of generosity on an honour board in the Dental School. Gifts to the Filling the Shelves appeal are an allowable tax deduction.

Update 2006
The generosity of the community has enabled the University of Adelaide Library to turn around the situation. Donations from the Filling the Shelves fund and better exchange rates have allowed the Library to buy electonic journal packages that include oral health titles.
Continued support will be needed to retain titles and increase student, staff and practitoner access to information.

Why establish a resource centre?

The appeal was launched by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Adelaide Professor James McWha and Emeritus Professor Tasman Brown on Wednesday the 22nd of May 2003.
