PubMed is a database of citations to more than 18 million journal articles from over 4,600 of the world's most significant health sciences journals. These PubMed citations to articles come from journals in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and the life sciences.  The database is updated weekly.

The University of Adelaide Library has a customized version of PubMed that provides direct links to some Uni of Adelaide's electronic journals. You can use this version of PubMed by finding it on

The Catalogue

As well as using The Catalogue you can get direct access to the customized version of PubMed by clicking on the button below.
Use one of these methods to open a new window to PubMed now.

From outside the university network you will be challenged to show you are a Uni of Adelaide student. To do this enter 'a' followed by your student number as your User Name, and your password.
Then click on the Login button to get access to PubMed.

If you need help with User Name and Password, click on the button below to see the Library site on authentication. Close the authentication window after you have viewed the content.

In your PubMed window click on Tutorials on the blue side bar on the left side of the screen.

PubMed will open a new window.
Click on The PubMed Tutorial link.

Now you should have 3 browser windows open,

 If you are using a home computer you may need to download the Flash player software now. You'll have to close down this window and the PubMed window first.
After downloading Flash player you should open a new window and return to this site at

Read through the section of the PubMed tutorial titled Using the Tutorial.

Read through the rest of the PubMed tutorial screen and then continue the tutorial by clicking Next on the side bar.

Continue to click on Next to read more details about PubMed.
Read up to and including the section on
Goals and Objectives.
You don't need to read the section called PubMed Overview.
