The Library Home

The University of Adelaide Library has a web site at http://www.adelaide.edu.au/library
To view the site right click on the link and open in a new window or new tab.

The site provides many options for finding information held by the Library, but two options on the top level of this site are Summon, and the Library's Catalogue.

Summon
Summon is a 'discovery tool' that can search the catalogue, and many of the library's electronic resources. Summon will find individual online journal articles by title.

The Catalogue
The Catalogue will help you to find books, journals, and other items in the Library's collections.

Reading Lists & Bibliographies
Before you can use Summon or the Catalogue you need to be able to tell the difference between books, chapters in books, and journal articles.
This is because these different sorts of citations are found on The Catalogue using different methods.

Here is an example of a reading list or bibliography.

Babbush, C.A. et al, 2011 Dental implants: the art and science. Maryland Heights, Mo.: Saunders Elsevier
Roberson, T.M., H. Heyman, & E.J. Swift (eds) 2002. Sturdevant's Art & science of operative dentistry. St Louis Mosby
Crawford,J.J., & R.H. Leonard 2002. Infection control (In) Roberson, T.M. et al. Sturdevant's Art & science of operative dentistry. pp 345-385
Al-Dakkak, I. 2010 Oral dysplasia and risk of progression to cancer. Evidence Based Dentistry 11(3) 91-92

Identifying Books

The first item in the reading list is a book

You can identify a citation to a book by the presence of:

author(s) or editor(s), date,  book title,
          publisher, and place of publication.

Identifying Chapters in a Book

You can identify a citation to a chapter in a book by the presence of:

the word 'in'
before the title of the book
also
the chapter author(s), chapter title
and details of the book itself

When you search for a chapter in the Catalogue, you need to search for
the book containing the chapter,
not the chapter itself.

Sometimes lecturers have permission to copy chapters or other parts of books.
These are made available to students on MyUni.

Identifying Journal Articles

You can identify a citation to a journal article by the presence of:

author(s) of the article, publication date, title of the article (usually),
title of the journal, journal volume number (and sometimes the issue number), pages of the article

and the absence of

publisher and place of publication

Known Book Title Searches

Using Summon
More than 1 million catalogue items and more than 500 million other items are available through Summon.

Click on Summon Advanced Search

Enter the book title enclosed in double quotes in the With these words in the title box.

Summon isn't case sensitive, and it ignores punctuation.
If the title is long you can truncate it by leaving out whole words at the start or the end of the title,

e.g. Atlas of oral implantology

Summon displays the results in 'Relevance' order.

You can refine searches by using the boxes in the side bar on the left of the screen.

You can hover your cursor over the title to get a few extra details, but clicking on the title will take you to the detailed Catalogue record for a book.

Using the Catalogue
Click on the Catalogue tab on the Library home.

Click on the pull down menu at Keyword (search engine style)
Click on Title (omit beginning 'The', 'A' etc)

Enter the title in the Search for: box

enter the title in full

breath malodor a step by step approach

or truncate the title

breath malodor a step by

but don't leave out words within the title

breath malodor step by step

Do leave out the word A, An, or The if it is the first word of the title.
The Catalogue isn't case sensitive so it doesn't matter if you use capital letters.
The Catalogue ignores punctuation including foreign language diacritics.

Click on the Search button.

The result appears.

If only one title appears, check that it's the book you are looking for.
Scroll down the screen to find the Location, Call Number and Status.

If more that one book has the same title The Catalogue will show you a screen of all of the items with that title.
You'll need to find the one you want.
Searching the Catalogue for the book Pathways of the pulp finds 8 editions.
The imprint column on the right of the screen shows the publication date.

You can sort the order of the titles on the Catalogue using the Sort by drop down menu.

Click on the highlighted text of the edition you want.

Scroll down the screen to find the location, call number and status.

Click on the author's name to see the list of items.

Click on the title of any item you want to see in more detail.

Finding a Chapter in a Book

Using Summon
Do you know if this is a chapter in an electronic book?
If yes, then do you know the title of the chapter?
If you do you can enter the chapter title into Summon Advanced search.

Remember to use double quotes.
You don't have to enter all of the title.

profiling dental plaque biofilm

Click on the Search button or press the Enter key.

If you know that the chapter you want is in an electronic book but don't know the chapter title, then you can search for the title of the book.

Using the Catalogue
Always begin by searching for the title or editor of the book in which the chapter or essay appears.
To find the chapter

Crawford J.J. & R.H. Leonard 2002. Infection control (In) Roberson, T.M. et al. Sturtevant's Art & science of operative dentistry p345-385.

You can use title search, or author search as above to find the book.

Once you have found the book scroll down to find the location and call number of the book.

you can locate the book and turn to page 345 to find the chapter.

Chapters in Electronic Books
Using the Catalogue

The library has access to many electronic books.
Again search for the book title and when the electronic book appears search the contents to click on the chapter you want.

Journal Title Searches

Electronic Journals

Finding the article

Yael Houri-Haddad, Amal Halabi, Wilfred Aubrey Soskolne 2008. Inflammatory response to chlorhexidine, minocycline HCl and doxycycline HCl in an in vivo mouse model. Journal of Clinical Periodontology Vol. 35(9) 783-788.

Using Summon
Just click on Advanced search and then enter the title or part of the title of the article in the With these words in the title box.

This should usually produce a single title.
If more than one citation appears check which one you want.
Click on the Full text icon.

Sometimes clicking on the full text icon will take you straight to the article>
At other times you may be taken to an article linker screen.
Click on the link to the article in Article Linker.

If there is more than one article link choose one.
You can go back to Article Linker if your first choice doesn't produce the full text of the article.

If your search for the article title in Summon search doesn't work then try searching for the title of the journal rather than the title of the article either in Summon or The Catalogue.

Finding ejournal articles
Using The Catalogue

You can search for the titles of journals (not the titles of journal articles) using the Catalogue.
Type the full title or truncated title of the journal into the Search for: box.
In the by box, choose Journal or Newspaper Title.

Don't use abbreviated titles such as j clin perio
use the full title journal of clinical periodontology,
or the truncated title such as journal of clinical perio

Most recent journals held by the Library are in electronic format.
Click on the highlighted text

Click on the highlighted Link to e-Resource.

Sometimes you might have to enter your student number and password before you can proceed.

You can enter the title of the article in double quotes in the Search box to link to the article.

Alternatively you can look for the issue you need.

Finding Printed Journal Articles
Many older volumes of journals and a few recent journal titles are still collected by the library in print format.

Requesting an Item From Joint Store

Searching by Topic

Logic Grids
Using a logic grid helps you with the language and logic of your search for a topic.

In a search for items on risk factors for dental fluorosis in children you can set up a logic grid with three concepts to search.
Write down the three concepts Risk Factors, Dental Fluorosis and Children

Underneath each of these write down any synonyms or alternative terms.

Using Summon

"risk factors" "dental fluorosis" child*
"risk factor" "mottled enamel" infant*
expos* "mottled teeth"
toothpaste "mottled tooth"
"tooth paste"

When you use Summon, phrases have to be enclosed in double quotes.
Notice that I've used * at the end of truncated terms such as child*
Summon will search as though you asked for any term that begins with the letters c-h-i-l-d
So you might find items containing the terms child or children or childhood or childcare etc.

Join items that are in the first column using OR logic.
Enclose the terms in round brackets

("risk factor" OR "risk factor" OR expos* OR toothpaste OR "tooth paste")

Do the same with the other columns of search terms

("dental fluorosis" OR "mottled enamel" OR "mottled teeth" OR "mottled tooth")

(child* OR infant*)

Join each of the column searches together using AND logic

("risk factors" OR "risk factor" OR expos* OR toothpaste OR "tooth paste") AND ("dental fluorosis" OR "mottled enamel" OR "mottled teeth" OR "mottled tooth") AND (child* OR infant*)

Enter this into the Summon search box.
Click on the Go button.

Summon performs the search but just be aware that it sometimes gives you the results in a new window while the screen view stays on the Library home.

Now you can use the Refine your search boxes on the left of the results screen to get the items you want.
Just remember that in refining your search you may be deleting valuable results.

Using Summon you can restrict your results to those that are available in full text online.
To do this click in the appropriate box.

Wait while Summon updates the results

You can also limit searches to peer reviewed journals.
Click in the appropriate box.

Again wait while Summon updates the result.

You can also limit by language and publication date.

You must remember that although Summon works quite well, it doesn't search all the journals you can access through the Library.
For doing comprehensive subject searches you will have to learn how to search the major databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge
There will be more information on how to search these later today.

Citing References
When you use information from books and journal articles in your essays and other assignments, you must acknowledge this.
You must give credit to the authors you quote by citing them in a bibliography (list of citations) at the end of your assignment. This way you will maintain your academic integrity.

The University of Adelaide has a document to help you with making sure that you reach the appropriate standards for acknowledging other authors' work.

Citation Styles
There are many citation styles that can be used for bibliographies.
You should always follow the citation style recommended by the School.
If there is no recommended style you should choose an internationally accepted style.
