How to Search Scopus

Find Scopus using The University of Adelaide Library Catalogue,
The University of Adelaide Library home, or
The University of Adelaide Library Databases site.

Direct link to Scopus

Use Scopus Advanced Search.

Scroll down the screen to the Codes area Double click on TITLE-ABS-KEY.

Put in your search between the ( ) that Scopus produces.

You should be able to use your PubMed search, but you'll have to remember to remove any field tags such as [mesh], [mh], or [tiab].

You can use MeSH, just make sure you don't include the field tags.

If you want to search for a phrase that isn't a MeSH make sure that you enclose the phrase in double quotes.

e.g. "adrenocorticotropic hormone"

Scopus will automatically search for plurals with common endings.

A simple search for vasopressin serotonin and acth in Scopus might be prepared like this

vasopressin* serotonin acth
    "adenotrophic hormone"
    corticotropin
    adrenocorticotrop*

Your search becomes

vasopressin* AND serotonin AND (acth OR "adenotrophic hormone" OR corticotropin OR adrenocorticotrop*)

Click on the Search button.

You can select the citations you want to keep individually by clicking in the boxes to the left of their titles, or click in the All box to select all.

Click on the Add to List button.

Notice the links to the right of each citation showing articles that cite them.

Click on the link to view the citations to these articles.

Again you can select individual citing articles or All, and Add to list.

Continue doing this for as many of the citing articles as you want.

When you have finished scroll to the top of the screen and click on My List.

Select all the citations.

Click on Output.

Choose the EndNote export option

Choose citations only, with abstract etc.

Click on the Export button.

When you get a dialogue box choose Open.

Find your Temporary EndNote Library and open it.

The citations should be imported automatically.

Scopus will also provide you with alerts.

Click on the Save as Alert link on the results screen

Give the search a name, add your email address and decide how often you want emails to arrive.

At the top of the Scopus screen you can click on MyAlerts.

From here you can delete alerts, view the latest results, and edit the search strategy.
