Chemistry call numbers

Chemistry books in the Library are mainly shelved on Level 1 south in the call numbers:

Related call numbers on Level 1 north and Level 2 are:

  • 574.5 later 577.14 Environmental chemistry
  • 615 Toxicology, safety, environmental
  • 660 Chemical engineering, safety

In searching the subject heading or keyword options of the Library catalogue for books in chemistry, it is reasonable to search subject headings and keyword terms for:

  • classes of substance e.g. Hydrocarbons; Organochlorine compounds; Pesticides
  • common substances e.g. Lead; Methane
  • techniques or general topics e.g. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrocopy; Asymmetric synthesis
However, it is unusual for books as a whole to be written on uncommon substances though they may have chapters or sections on them. Rather than look for an uncommon substance, try instead the class to which the substance belongs.

Note also the subdivisions of subject headings that may be useful if you are trying to limit a search to certain aspects e.g. Lead - Analysis or Lead - Environmental aspects:

  • - Analysis; - Synthesis; - Spectra; -Tables; - Handbooks, manuals, etc
  • - Environmental aspects; - Toxicology; - Safety measures
