Environmental chemistry, safety, MSDS

The Internet has good collections of data on the environmental and toxicological effects of chemical substances. There are also major printed reference sources. See also other data sections of Chemistry resources.

Typical data in the sources mentioned here include physical properties, human and animal health effects, safety measures in handling, environmental fate and ecotoxicity, test methods. For best results, link to the individual web sites below. You can also do a preliminary search of the sites by entering search terms here:

Toxseek
A search engine of toxicological sources from NLM, NIH, WHO and other organisations.

Chemfinder
A useful search engine for chemical sites, including environmental and toxicological. Can be searched by name, formula, some properties and substructure.

A collection of health and safety, environmental and property data on common chemicals, pesticides, poisons, food additives. Includes:

NIOSH Pocket guide to chemical hazards
Hazard and property data on chemical hazards in the workplace.

Toxnet, National Library of Medicine
A collection of NLM and EPA factual and bibliographic databases on toxicology and hazardous chemicals.
ChemIDplus can be searched by structure, name, registry number, formula and links to substances within Toxnet databases.
Databases include HSDB(hazardous substances), IRIS (human health risk assessment), Gene-Tox (mutagenicity test data), CCRIS (chemical carcinogenesis), Toxline, DART/ETIC(developmental and reproductive toxicology), TRI (releases of toxic chemicals to the environment).

CAMEO Chemicals: an online database of hazardous chemicals, NOAA
Has searchable properties and hazards and an option to predict reactivity of mixtures of two chemicals.

Syracuse Research Corporation databases
A set of free and demonstration databases including Environmental Fate Data Base: DATALOG, CHEMFATE, BIOLOG, BIODEG; TSCATS: Toxic Substance Control Act Test Submission database; PHYSPROP: physical properties demonstration database.

RTK Net environmental databases
A useful collection of health and environmental databases some of which include toxicological information on chemicals.

DAIN Metadatabase of Internet Resources for Environmental Chemicals
A search engine to find useful databases on environmental chemicals. The list of databases can be searched by type of database, type of chemical, property.

Agency for Toxic substances and Disease Registry, U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services.
The agency is concerned with the effect on public health of hazardous substances in the environment. The site includes a database HazDat, fact sheets (ToxFAQs), documents, reports and news and a search engine.

Chemical Scorecard, Environmental Defense Fund
A U.S. database showing industrial sources, effects and regulatory control of chemical pollutants.

Chemical Assessment Reports, National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme, Australia.
Includes New chemical assessments full public reports and Priority existing chemical assessment report, also in Main collection 363.179105 P958.2. Has physicochemical properties, toxicity and environmental hazard data.

National chemical information gateway, Dept of the Environment and Heritage, Australia
Links to Australian and international regulatory and data web sites including NICNAS: Australian inventory of chemical substances search and safety information sheets.

Pesticide Action Network Pesticides database
Human toxicity and ecotoxicity data for more than 6,000 pesticide ingredients.

Compendium of pesticide common names
Contains ISO approved common names for pesticides together with IUPAC and CAS names and registry numbers.

EXTOXNET Pesticide Information Profiles, Oregon State University and others
Data on health and environmental effects and some physical properties of pesticides.

A useful collection of toxicological data on 5000 substances with potential environmental risk. Includes occupational exposure thresholds, ecotoxicity data, environmental fate and physical properties and references. It is arranged alphabetically by substance name. Each volume has its own index by chemical name and CAS registry number. There is no cumulative index for all 7 volumes.

Includes names, structure, basic properties, toxicity, hazard data. Has indexes by molecular formula and registry number.
