Science databases and indexes

Databases that are of interest to more than one scientific discipline are listed here. In general, prefer databases for your discipline - see database subject guides.

General and applied science

Web of Science and Scopus
Large databases covering science and other subjects and allowing cited reference searching and topic searching.

Academic Onefile or Academic search premier
Useful for any undergraduate essay topics where comprehensive search results are not needed. They index a selection of major science and other journals.

Journal citation reports - for journal impact factors and rankings.
Education databases - for science education.
Philosophy databases - for philosophy and ethics of science.

Some publisher web sites and databases have email or RSS alert services which can deliver details of new articles on your topic.

Australian science

There is no current single database covering Australian science comprehensively.

  • APA-FT: Australian public affairs information service full text - indexes social aspects of Australian science
  • Arrow Discovery Service - Australian research, published and unpublished.
  • Australian science abstracts and Australian science index. 1957-83 with 1978-83 on microfiche. Reference collection 505 A93 and 505 A93.2 - indexes earlier Australian science literature
  • C.S.I.R.O abstracts and CSIRO index. 1952-86 with 1979-86 on microfiche. Reference collection 505 A93C and 505 A93Cs - indexes papers by CSIRO scientists.
  • C.S.I.R.O. published papers; subject index. 1916-68. Reference collection 505 A93Cc

Translations

  • Translators in Adelaide are listed under the heading Translations in the telephone directory yellow pages.
  • Web translation services such as Babelfish give literal translations which may give a rough idea of the usefulness of an article.
  • Science language dictionaries are useful for technical terms.
  • C.S.I.R.O. index. 1975-86 has translations paged separately at the back of each issue. Reference collection 505 A93Cs with later issues on microfiche.
  • Cover to cover translations of some Russian journals are available. These are listed in the Library catalogue under their original Russian titles. Note that the volume and issue numbering of the translated journal often does not exactly match that of the original.
