Library services FAQ
for Science, Mathematics and Engineering
staff and postgraduates

Who is the research librarian for my discipline?

Contact your research or branch librarian if you have questions about any library matters e.g. ordering books, putting books in the Reserve collection, using databases, searching remote databases, looking at books that are being catalogued, the availability of electronic journals. If research librarians can't answer your question, they will direct you to the person who can.

How do I get books or journal articles that are not held by the Barr Smith Library?

There are several document delivery services.

See Interlibrary requests from other Australian or overseas libraries
You can borrow books and photocopies of journal articles or book chapters from other libraries or commercial document delivery services through the Interlibrary request service. There is a charge for the service. Requests are made electronically.

See Intercampus Library service between Waite, Roseworthy and Barr Smith Library
You can borrow directly from all campus libraries or the Intercampus loan service will deliver books and photocopies of journal articles between Waite, Roseworthy and Barr Smith Libraries. There is a small charge to cover the photocopy costs of articles. Requests are made electronically.

See Reciprocal borrowing from Flinders and University of SA libraries
You can borrow books (but not journals) directly from Flinders and the University of SA using your University of Adelaide student card.

How do I find which other libraries hold a book or journal?

Use Libraries Australia

Waite and Roseworthy books and journals are listed in the University of Adelaide Library catalogue.

Flinders, University of South Australia, interstate and overseas catalogues can be reached through Other libraries' catalogues under Find other resources on the Library web home page.

Which databases can be searched?

See Find articles on a subject.
Ask your Research or Branch librarian to show you how to use databases.

How do I use EndNote to store citations from a database search?

The University of Adelaide has a site licence for the bibliographic management software EndNote. You can store citations in a personal database, search them and export them easily as bibliographies. See Bibliographic software: EndNote for information on downloading software, manuals, training and importing records from databases.

How do I find articles that have cited an article?

Use the Web of science database which indexes citing articles from 1980-. For a comprehensive search for articles that have cited an author, search by the first author of each of his or her articles.

How can I become aware of new articles of interest as they are published?

Several databases (e.g. the Web of Knowledge group, PubMed) have email alerting services.
Major journal publisher web sites often have alerting services for their own journals.

Where can I get the impact factors (rankings) for journals?

The Journal citation reports database contains journal ranking lists and impact factors based on citation statistics derived from Web of science.

What electronic journals are available to University of Adelaide staff and students?

Search the Library catalogue for individual journal titles. Use its Journal or Newspaper Title option. Some subject guides link to lists of electronic journals for the subject.

How do I order new books for the Library

Check with your research librarian.

How do I check whether a book is on order?

Books ordered but not yet on the shelves are listed in the catalogue as on order (for those not yet received) or in process (for those being catalogued). You can ask at the Information desk to look at an 'in process' book in the library or ask at the Loans desk to put a Request on a book for borrowing once it is catalogued.

How do I find new books received in the Library?

New books are displayed each week on the new book shelf and listed in the New books list which has an RSS feed.

Where can I get details of citation styles to use in citing books, articles and electronic sources?

You should consult your supervisor for the citation style preferred by your discipline. There are general guides to thesis writing in the Library and on the Internet which describe citation styles (such as Harvard, Chicago etc). There are also guides that concentrate on scientific writing.
EndNote bibliographic software makes it easy to produce a citation list in the style of your choice.

Where can I find the requirements for my own thesis?

See the Adelaide Graduate Centre: Specifications for thesis.
You should also deposit an electronic copy of your thesis.
You can look at others' theses in the Library to get an idea of typical layouts. To find theses from your Department, search the Library catalogue with a keyword search such as: adelaide and thesis and chemistry where chemistry is the Department name. PhD and Masters theses have call numbers 09PH, 09S.M etc which shelve before 100 in the Barr Smith Main collection (i.e. read the number as 090).
