Library tutorial for science
Section 2C. Find a known journal article

You can search the Library catalogue for journal articles if you know the article's journal title, volume and pages. If you don't know the article details, search your topic in a database first - see section 5. Articles may be in:

  • printed journals which are shelved under call numbers in the Library's collections and/or
  • electronic journals which you reach through Web links and can read online, print or save.

How to search

  • Link to the Library catalogue through the Catalogue tab at the top of Library web pages.
  • At by: on the Basic search screen, choose Journal or Newspaper Title.
  • Enter the journal title not the article title - see section 2A if you do not know how to distinguish them.

  • For a print journal, go to the full record view and check that we hold the volume/year you want. Note its location and call number and find it on the shelves. For example, for the print version of Chemical geology we hold from 1966 to 2001:

  • An electronic journal has [electronic resource] following the title. Go to the full record view and check that we have access to the years you want. In this example, we get 1995 and later issues. Click the link at Link to e-Resource to reach the full article.

You can also look at a Library Catalogue: searching by journal title video tutorial of the search steps.

Questions

Search the Library catalogue for the journal title in this citation: Budyko, M. (1999) Climate catastrophes. Global and planetary change. 20(4), 281-288. You'll find a choice between print and electronic versions.

A. Where in the Barr Smith Library would you expect to find the print journal issue containing that article?

B. Link to the electronic article. What are the first words of its Introduction?

Answers

A. Search for global and planetary change since this is the journal title. It is in the Joint Store. Note that the 'Library Has:' section of the catalogue record shows the last year we hold in printed form is 2000.

B. To reach the full text of the electronic journal article, search for global and planetary change. Choose the catalogue record labelled [electronic resource], which shows that we get all issues from 1995 onwards so you can get the 1999 issue mentioned in the citation. Click the link at Link to e-resource, choose volume 20 issue 4 and find the article on page 281 and link to its PDF version. The first words of the introduction are: Climate catastrophes occur with...

Note:

  • Abbreviations such as J. org. chem are sometimes used instead of full titles like Journal of organic chemistry. In the Library catalogue, search full journal titles. You can find the full journal titles corresponding to many abbreviations through web lists - see abbreviations.com.
  • When an article is on your course reading list, and only then, it may be worth searching the article title, in case the Library has set up an electronic link especially for the course.
