Before you start research in biochemistry, genetics or microbiology, make sure you know at least about the following library materials and services. See each link for more detail.

  • Help
    Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology librarian

  • Databases for finding journal articles
    Biosis (Biological abstracts), PubMed (Medline) and in some cases SciFinder Scholar are the main databases. Also use:
    Web of science - to find articles that have cited given articles or authors.
    Journal citation reports - to find impact factors for journals.
    Dissertation abstracts and Index to theses - to find North American and British theses.
    Libraries Australia (Kinetica) - to find other Australian Libraries holding a book or journal.
    Library catalogue - to find all print and electronic books and journals in or accessible through the Library.

    Email alerts: Web of science, its close relation Current contents, Biosis and PubMed have email alert services: details of new articles on your search topic are emailed to you.

  • EndNote software to store and manage your own references.
    You can:
    - search and sort your references
    - add references; import references from databases
    - when writing an article in Word, automatically format its bibliography in a citation style of your choice.

  • Electronic journals
    Search the Library catalogue to find whether you can get an electronic or printed journal. You can also browse a list of molecular bioscience electronic journals.

  • New books
    A list of books received each week. Use the request form on the School of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences intranet to order new books.

  • Patents

  • Document delivery
    If books and journals are not available through the Barr Smith Library, we can get them for you from other Libraries (Interlibrary loan) or from the Waite or Roseworthy campuses (Intercampus loan).

  • Borrowing from Flinders or Uni of SA
    You can use your student or staff card to borrow directly from Flinders University and the University of South Australia libraries.

  • Your thesis
    Deposit your Masters or PhD thesis electronically - Australian digital theses program.
    The Image and Copy Centre will print copies of your thesis.
