Databases for Physics
Back to: Physics Resources
This guide to physics and mathematical physics databases can be used to find journal articles and other publications on physics and mathematical physics topics. Use of most databases is governed by licence agreements which restrict access to members of the University of Adelaide community, for purposes of non-commercial research, education or personal use. On computers outside the University network, you will be prompted for your User Id & password.
Contents
ABSTRACTS & INDEXESInspec , 1969-
An index to journals and conference proceedings in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computers and computing, and information technology.
Academic OneFile, 1980-
Academic OneFile is an interdisciplinary index to scholarly and general-interest journals and magazines. Coverage is very broad, from the Journal of Biological Chemistry to Popular Mechanics, and includes most areas of academic enquiry, as well as many areas of popular culture. The full text of articles is available for many of the journals indexed.
Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Information (ANSTI)
Bibliographic references to Australian literature in nuclear science research and development, especially peaceful applications such as medicine, biology, agriculture, earth sciences and industry. Indexes technical and scientific reports, theses, articles, conference papers, patents and books. Works by Australian authors, or works published in Australia on the relevant topics are included. Topics covered are nuclear science research and development, production, physics, mechanics, engineering, health and safety, the environment, nuclear medicine, economic and sociological aspects, and management and administration of facilities and programmes. The database is produced by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.
MatheSciNet, 1940-
It has a very comprehensive coverage of pure mathematics. Covers international research literature in mathematics and related areas including mathematical physics.
Compendex, 1884-
Ei CompendexWeb is the internet version of The Engineering Index. It covers engineering journals, conferences, and reports. All areas of engineering are represented. It can be useful for physics.
Scientific and technical information
Scientific and technical information resources of the Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) in broad disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials, biology, engineering, energy efficiency, and other related subject areas. Resources include tools for cross searching bibliographic citations, full-text technical reports, preprints, and journals citations residing in multiple databases and Web sites.
The NASA Astrophysics Data System. Abstract Service.
NASA-funded service providing access to four sets of abstracts dating back to 1975: astronomical articles, space instrumentation and engineering articles, physics and geophysics articles, and the Los Alamos preprint server. They include abstracts from all major journals, many minor journals, conference proceedings, NASA reports, and many PhD theses. Users can query by author, object name (astronomy set only), keywords, words in the title, and words in the abstract text. The resulting list is ranked by how closely the paper matches the query. From this list, one can obtain all of the information contained in the ADS Abstracts database (including the abstract text).
NASA Langley Technical Reports Server
A service which allows users to search available online NASA published documents, including meeting presentations, journal articles, conference proceedings, and technical reports. Many documents are available in compressed PostScript and PDF formats. All documents are unclassified and publicly available.
NIST Physics Laboratory publications (after 1991)
Searchable
Publications of the NIST Atomic Data Centers (W.L. Wiese and W.C. Martin)
Critically evaluated data and bibliographies on atomic spectra -- energy levels, wavelengths, transition probabilities, and line shapes.
CITATION INDEXESCitation indexes are useful to follow up an author in your field of interest to see how his/her work have been used by later scholars/researchers.
Web of Science, 1980-
It is useful for searching for articles that have cited a given article and which are therefore assumed to be on a related topic. It can also be searched by topic but lacks the depth of indexing of databases like Inspec . Web of Science includes abstracts; the standalone version does not. The database covers all areas of science.
A companion, Journal Citation Reports is a comprehensive, and unique resource for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from scholarly and technical journals worldwide. It gives rankings and impact factors for multidisciplinary and international journals
Scopus, 1996- and some earlier
Like Web of Science it covering science and other subjects and allowing cited reference searching for articles that have cited a given article. The 1980 onwards date range of Web of science makes it the more useful for cited reference searching.
Both databases can also be searched by topic, author, etc.
CURRENT AWARENESS
Many databases and electronic journals provide a free alerting service that will send updated results of a research topic search or tables of contents of a new journal issue to your email address or use RSS feeds (what's this?) to distribute the information
Other servers similarly give pre-publication or at-publication notification of journal articles:
- The latest issues of journals received by the Barr Smith Library are kept on the sloping display shelves in the Current journals area on Level 3 North. Previous issues are filed on the flat shelves below the sloping display shelves until there are sufficient to be sent for binding. Current journals are arranged in call number order.
- Publishers' web sites for individual journals display tables of contents often in advance of publication.
- The following publishers will also email to you the contents of new issues at or before publication or let you save search profiles to run regularly.
DISSERTATION INDEXESDissertations are not usually included in regular indexing services hence the need for the following databases. Note that there is no current index to Australian theses.
Dissertation Abstract, 1861-
Citations and abstracts to doctoral dissertations submitted to accredited North American institutions and some other international institutions.
Index To Theses, 1970-
Contains bibliographic details of theses accepted by the Universities of Great Britain and Ireland and the Council for National Academic Awards.
PhysDis: Physics Theses in Europe
Search for Physics Theses/Dissertations in European Physics Departments
Australian Digital Theses Program
The aim of the ADT program is to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the postgraduate research students at Australian universities. The theses will be available worldwide via the web. The ideal behind the program is to provide access to, and promote Australian research to the international community.
JOURNAL HOLDINGS IN AUSTRALIA
Lists the libraries in Australia that hold the book or journal title. Your University userid and password needed for authentication.
Locations for journals held in Australian libraries including most State, university, government department, TAFE and public libraries. Includes a directory of libraries.
CONFERENCE INDEXESConference papers are often difficult to identify and locate. The following indexes may be useful.
AIP Conference Proceedings report findings presented at many of the most important scientific meetings around the world.
Institute of Physics. Journal of Physics: Conference Series |
