Starting Points
When you need to define your topic and/or get some background reading try consulting a dictionary or encyclopedia on tourism. The guide to Anthropology dictionaries/encyclopedias will help if you need explanations of anthropological terminology or theory.
To find overviews on the subject try the following:
- Anthropology of tourism (2001) [electronic]
[A literature review of major themes anthropologists have covered in the study of tourism. Published in vol.30 of the Annual Review of Anthropology. Also available in print format]
- Hosts and guests : the anthropology of tourism (1989) [print]
[A collection of essays on the cultural impact of tourism in differing societies. A book review is linked here]
- Introduction to tourism and anthropology (1999) [print]
[Examines the issues surrounding tourism's human impact & the dynamic relationship between tourism and culture. A book review is linked here]
- Tourism and culture: an applied perspective (1997) [print]
[Focussing on applied anthropology, this publication provides detailed case studies that explore the complexity of modern tourism relationships]
Finding Books Using The Library Catalogue
Books can be found by searching the library catalogue. Keyword searching is probably the best way of identifying material, and your results will be maximised by using keyword searching techniques such as truncation and Boolean searching, and by incorporating subject headings into your search where appropriate. Here are some examples on how to construct searches:
- culture and tourism
- tourism and bali
- tourism and "aboriginal australians"
- ecotouri* and australia
- tourism and (anthropol* or ethnograph*)
Finding Journal Articles Using Databases
Journal articles can be found through databases listed in the Databases for Anthropology guide - Sociological Abstracts, Academic OneFile and Academic Search Premier are probably the best starting points.
Other databases to consider are CAB Abstracts which has international coverage of leisure, recreation and tourism topics, and Geobase, a major geographic database which includes coverage of tourism topics.
In addition, there are bibliographies of books & journal articles in the library which are probably most useful for identifying earlier material on tourism & leisure topics. There is also an unannotated bibliography available [web access] from AnthroGlobe.
