Finding Books Using The Library Catalogue
Books can be found by searching the library catalogue. The following subject heading searches may be useful starting points:
visual anthropology motion pictures in ethnology photography in ethnology sound recordings in ethnology documentary films
But keyword searching is probably the best way of identifying material, and your results will be maximised by using keyword searching techniques such as truncation and Boolean searching, and by incorporating subject headings into your search where appropriate. Here are some examples on how to construct searches:
- "visual anthropology"
"visual communication" and (science or technology) - photograph? and (ethnolog? or anthropolog? or ethnograph?)
- (filmmaking or "film-making") and (ethnolog? or anthropolog? or ethnograph?)
Finding Journal Articles Using Databases
Journal articles can be found through the database Film and television literature index and through other appropriate databases listed in the Databases for Anthropology guide.
Another more specialised source is Documentary and ethnographic film: a short bibliography [web access] which provides references for many ethnographic film-makers
