Starting Points

Its important to think about what you are searching for. Try to think of other terms, alternative terms, synonyms. Be mindful of alternative spellings.

Search techniques

Boolean operators, i.e. AND, OR allow you to decrease or increase the amount of material you retrieve.

AND search

globalisation and education

globalisation and education and australia

OR search

power or influence

Phrase search
By putting quotatio marks around words you are telling the database you want to find adjacent words e.g.

"population growth"

"nation-state"

"world population trends"

Combine with Boolean operators

"global cities" or "world cities"

("global cities" or "world cities") and globalisation

**you must bracket the OR search if used with an AND search

Truncation

geograph*

Finds all the words that come after the stem
i.e. geography, geographies, geographical

Wildcard

globali?ation

Replaces a character and allows you to find alternative spellings
i.e. globalisation, globalization

Always check out the Help section of the databases you are using as truncation symbols and wildcards, may differ.
