Authentication for Library electronic resources
In effect, there are only two ways to authenticate yourself:
| Method 1 |
| Username: | your University of Adelaide ID
|
| Password: | your University of Adelaide password |
Students - your University of Adelaide ID is your Student number preceded by a lower case letter 'a', for example, a1234567.
Staff - your University of Adelaide ID is the username you use to access your email. |
| Method 2 |
| Username: | the Library barcode from your University of Adelaide ID Card
|
| Password: | your last name in UPPER CASE letters |
| Notes: The final character of your Library barcode is a letter, which must be typed in UPPER CASE. Omit all punctuation and spaces from last names: Jack Ponsonby-Smith is PONSONBYSMITH; Rita van der Wegen is VANDERWEGEN; Rene D'Annunzio is DANNUNZIO. |
| If Method 1 fails, we suggest you try Method 2 |
| If Method 2 fails, we suggest you try Method 1 |

What is authentication?
When you need to access an electronic resource on the University of Adelaide network you may be asked for authentication. Many resources, such as online journals for which the Library pays a subscription, are restricted by licence conditions to current University of Adelaide students and staff. Authentication is the means by which you identify yourself as entitled to use University of Adelaide electronic resources.
You will also need to authenticate yourself when you login to your account on MyLibrary through the Library Catalogue.
This page describes what you need to do to authenticate yourself if you are using a computer that is directly connected to the University network. There is a separate page of instructions for remote access.
The University provides information on logging in to MyUni.
Authentication from within the University of Adelaide network
You are directly connected to the University of Adelaide network if you are using a computer in situations such as:
- in the Barr Smith Library
- in any of the University of Adelaide branch libraries
- in a student computer lab
- in your office on campus
The authentication procedure is different for students and staff members:
| Students |
User Name is your Student number preceded by a lower case letter 'a'
Password is your university password
|
| Staff members |
User Name is your staff email login
Password is your university password
|
Student ID Card
Dialogue boxes
The authentication dialogue boxes look like this:
 | For access to electronic resources that are outside the University of Adelaide network, for example an electronic journal or a Google search.
|
|
 | For access to Library digitised resources such as reading list journal articles and past exam papers.

Are you under 18 years?
If you can get access to Student email, MyUni and Student Computers but not to an e-resource on the web, and you are under 18 years old, it may be that you haven't filled out and returned a consent form. Information about consent forms is on the University's website.
You can get a consent form from Card Services on Hughes Plaza, and need to return it there - you should then have access to e-resources within 24 hours.
This applies only to access to e-resources from within the Uni network - outside the Uni, from an ISP, you won't be blocked from access.
Need help ?
The Library is not able to help with problems you may have accessing the University network. There are comprehensive information pages on the University's Information Technology Services website.
