netLibrary Help
What is netLibrary?
The University of Adelaide Library has many full text e-books
that you may find when searching our Library catalogue.
NetLibrary is one of the many suppliers we use to make e-books
available to staff and students.
The University of Adelaide Library, together with a consortium
of Australian university libraries have selected 1,894 titles with
a further 3,407 internet free netLibrary titles also
available to subscribers.
Help
This is a basic guide to some of the key functions in
netLibrary. For more details go to the NetLibrary range
of online help. The Help button on the
netLibrary home page has a comprehensive help guide but specific
help "tips" pages are also available.
View Netlibrary books
In the Library catalogue, display the full record of the electronic
resource, then click on the link at the top of the record to
the right of the Link to e-resource. You should
now see this screen:-

In the Contents window (see below) click the box
to the left of the chapter headings to expand or close the
subheadings. Click on the chapter title to open the text in
the full text display window.

When viewing a book use the Search this eContent
located underneath the contents frame to find specific information
in the full text. The results offer an easy method for moving to
each occurrence of a specific word throughout the book.
You can toggle between all function using the tab buttons in
the left hand frame - Contents, Search, eContent Details, Notes and
Dictionary.
Display options vary depending on how the item was
digitised. Titles added more recently offer a greater range
of Acrobat Reader tools. The tool bar above the full
text has the navigation buttons for moving to the next/previous
page within a chapter or you can enter a page number and click on
the GO button as illustrated below.

Right click in the full text area for quick access to a
menu that lists some of the more frequently used features and
functionality of the online reader (see image above). If you
select/highlight a word from the text before right clicking you
will see additional options in the right click menu:
- Search for in this eBook searches for the selected word
within the full text of the eBook you are currently viewing.
- Look up in the Dictionary searches for the selected word
within the dictionary.
Toggle between several open
items
You can toggle between several opened e-books.
1/ Repeat the Search and View clicks for several
items.
2/ A list of Open Items is available in the Other drop
down menu.
3/ To toggle between several books click on the drop down
arrow and select a title from your list then click on
GO.

Create a netLibrary
account / login
You do not need login to view a book but you
should be aware that creating an account so you can login allows
you to:-
- Permanently save an e-book
title to a personal list.
- Add and save notes linked to
specific pages of the e-book you are viewing.
- Checkout an e-book to guarantee
exclusive access for longer than 15 minutes.
- Be notified when a checked–out item
becomes available for you to View.
Username / password - this is NOT provided by the Library - you
need to create your own username and password.
Click on the link to Create a Free Account in the top
right hand corner of the home page and scroll down to see the form
you need to fill in:-

If you forget the password first click on Login and then
click on the Forgot your Username or
Password? Link.
Enter your email address and then your security information and
netLibrary will email the password to you.
NOTE that the Library has no record of staff and student netLibrary
passwords.
Check-out an
e-book
Selecting this function will require that you Log in first.
You may Checkout a book for your exclusive use for a specific
period depending on the owning library. Click on the
eContent details button and scroll down to click on the
Checkout for 2 hours link When the eContent has been checked
out successfully the Check-out link toggles to become the Check-in
link.
My List
& Notes
Selecting this function will require that you Log in first.
NetLibrary allows you to save titles to a personal list which you
can display with or without Notes.
To add a book to your netLibrary personal list, when viewing a
book, first click on the eContent details button and
scroll down to click on the Add to my list link.
To view you whole list with attached notes click on the
Home page link then go to the tool bar across the top and
click on My List and Notes to look at a list of titles and
associated notes you have saved.

Adding Notes.
When viewing a book click on the Notes button. The default
name for the note is the page number. Key in your notes and
then click on the Add note button.
View Notes.
Click on the Notes button and scroll down to see a list of all the
notes you have added for a particular book. You will need to
login to see your notes.

Print / Save
/Email
These options are very limited.
There is no specific function to download or
Save to a file. See information above on
My List & Notes
where you can bookmark a specific page or chapter using the Notes
function.
You are able to copy blocks of text by first highlighting the
text then holding the CTRL+C keys to copy and
then click in a new window followed by holding down
CTRL+V to paste.
You can Email the eContent Details (bibliographic
details) to yourself or a friend. At the bottom of the
eContent Details screen click on Email This Information.
Print. Only one page may be printed at a
time. Use the print button in the toolbar of the full text
window rather than the browsers print button.
Images / photos do have Print/Save/Email buttons. Click in
the image/photo to see these options in the top left hand corner of
the image.
Search Netlibrary
When you want to return to netLibrary to see your list of saved
titles and associated notes you can perform a title search in the
Library Catalogue for netLibrary. The result will take you to
the netLibrary home page which has a links to all functions in the
top right hand corner as well as a search box.
Use quotation marks for phrase
searching. The Search tips link has more
detail on how to search in netlibrary.

When viewing a book use the Search this eContent
located underneath the contents window to find specific information
in the full text of a single ebook. Alternatively click on
the Search tab button to see both Search this
eContent or Search new eContent. Search
new eContent finds other books by keyword. The Keyword field
searches for your terms in the title, author, subject
heading, publisher and ISBN fields.
CHECK-IN
remember to use the Check-in button when you have finished
with your book as this will allow others to use the book
immediately rather than waiting for your time to expire. Either
from the eContent details or Home screens.
LOG-OUT when leaving netLibrary remember to log out. If
your screen does not have a log out click on Home and then click on
the Log out link in the top right hand corner of the screen.
