Remote access to electronic resources by University of Adelaide users

Access to electronic resources is controlled by an authentication process. In effect, there are only two ways to authenticate yourself:

Method 1
Username: your University of Adelaide ID
Password: your University of Adelaide password
Students - your University of Adelaide ID is your Student number preceded by a lower case letter 'a', for example, a1234567.
Staff - your University of Adelaide ID is the username you use to access your email.

Method 2
Username: the Library barcode from your University of Adelaide ID Card
Password: your last name in UPPER CASE letters
Notes: The final character of your Library barcode is a letter, which must be typed in UPPER CASE. Omit all punctuation and spaces from last names: Jack Ponsonby-Smith is PONSONBYSMITH; Rita van der Wegen is VANDERWEGEN; Rene D'Annunzio is DANNUNZIO.

If Method 1 fails, we suggest you try Method 2
If Method 2 fails, we suggest you try Method 1

If you are still not successful, or you want detailed instructions, please read on...

What is authentication ?

When you need to access an electronic resource on the University of Adelaide network you may be asked for authentication. Many resources, such as online journals for which the Library pays a subscription, are restricted by licence conditions to current University of Adelaide students and staff. Authentication is the means by which you identify yourself as entitled to use electronic resources.

This page describes what you need to do to authenticate yourself from a computer that is not directly connected to the University of Adelaide network, such as a computer that you are using at your home. There is a separate page of Authentication procedures for computers that are on the University network.

University Dialup service access

The simplest way to connect to the University network is through the Dialup service.
There are separate information pages for student access and staff access.
If you connect through the Dialup service the authentication procedures are exactly the same as those for users who are directly connected to the University network.

Other access methods

If you connect to the University of Adelaide network through an intermediary such as a commercial Internet Service Provider or from a government department server, you may not be allowed access to licenced electronic resources.
For many resources this problem may be overcome by authentication, which means that you will be asked to enter a User Name and Password before proceeding.

Authentication

There are two different forms of authentication in use at present. When a box appears on the screen asking you to authenticate yourself, please look closely to see what User Name and Password are required.

Barcode authentication

If you see either of these boxes:

barcode authentication

barcode authentication

the Username is the barcode from your University of Adelaide ID Card
the Password is your last name.

Please note that the last character of your barcode (which is a letter), and also your last name, must both be entered in UPPER CASE letters.

University ID authentication

If you see either of these boxes:

university ID authentication

university ID authentication

you will need to use your University of Adelaide identification.

The authentication procedure is different for students and staff members:

Students
User Name is your Student number preceded by a lower case letter 'a'
Password is your university password

Staff members
User Name is your staff email login
Password is your university password

Changed ISP

If you have recently changed your Internet Service Provider (e.g. from Camtech to Ozemail) and you find that your authentication no longer works, try clearing your browser cache.

Remote access not possible

Remote access is not possible to a few of our electronic resources. Please refer to the Library catalogue record for the individual electronic resource for details on access restrictions.

Need help ?

The Library is not able to help with problems you may have accessing the University network; you should contact the University's Information Technology Services Helpdesk.

There are comprehensive information pages dealing with the University's online services on the Information Technology Services websites:
