What to look for
The Status: line on a Catalogue record provides essential information that you'll need to find a book in the Library. When a book is ordered for the Library's collection a Catalogue record is created. The Status: line changes to track the progress of the book through the Library system, both before and after it has been added to the collections.
This page explains exactly what a particular status means for any book that is in the University of Adelaide Library system.
If you are not sure about a book's status, please don't hesitate to ask for help at the Research Help desk in the Barr Smith Library or at the Library desk in the Branch libraries.
No item data available/On order
The status No item data available:

means that the Library has ordered a copy of the book from a bookseller.
In Process
The status In Process:

means that the book has arrived in the Library's Technical Services and is awaiting processing - it needs to be catalogued and added to our database before it can go into the collection.
There are two ways you can speed up the processing:
- If your need is not too urgent, ask Library staff at Service Enquiries to place a Request on the book for you (you can't place a Request directly - we have to do it for you). The book will be processed urgently and will appear on the New books display in the next week or so. You'll be notified by email as soon as it is available for loan
- If you urgently need to see the book, give us 24 hours notice and we'll bring it down to the Research Help desk. You'll be able to read the book in the Library but you won't be able to borrow it. Contact us by telephone (8303 5372) or by email (library@adelaide.edu.au)
New books
The status New books:

tells you that the book is on the New books shelves. Most books are displayed on New books for one week. You can place a Request on a New book in the usual way. If you're not sure about this, have a look at the Requests help page.
Available
The status Available:

means that the book is not currently on loan; you should find it on the shelf in the Main collection. If the book is not there, check our help page Can't find your book?.
On loan
The status On loan:

shows that the book has been borrowed. The full Catalogue record tells you when the book is due to be returned.
You can place a Request on the book in the usual way. This means that the person who has the book on loan won't be able to renew the loan period and the book will be kept for you as soon as it is returned. If you're not sure about placing a Request on a book that is on loan, have a look at the Requests help page.
Renewed
The status Renewed:

indicates that the person who borrowed the book has not finished with it and has renewed the loan for a further period. The main Catalogue record tells you when the book is due to be returned.
You can place a Request on the book in the usual way. If you're not sure about this, have a look at the Requests help page.
Overdue
The status Overdue:

shows that the person who borrowed the book has not returned it by the due date.
You can place a Request on the book in the usual way. If you're not sure about this, have a look at the Requests help page.
If you need the book urgently please let us know at Service Enquiries, or at the Library desk in the Branch libraries.
Just returned
The status Just returned:

means that the book has been returned to the Library within the past 24 hours. The exact time it was discharged from the Library loans system is shown on the full Catalogue record.
Books that have been returned from loan, and are waiting to be reshelved, are kept in rough call number order on Reshelving trolleys adjacent to the shelves.
