Library services for University of Adelaide Alumni
- Costs
- Payment of $55 entitles you to book borrowing privileges for twelve months.
Alumni members who wish also to borrow bound volumes of journals must pay a further fee of $22
All fees include GST.
- How do I apply?
- You should ask in person for a Registration form during office hours (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) from:
- Services desk, Barr Smith Library Level 3 South
- Loans desk, Waite Library
- Loans desk, Roseworthy Campus Library
You will be asked to provide photo ID.
- Library Card
- Alumni members who join the Library will be issued with a Library
Card. You will need to bring this Card with you when you use the
Library.
If you lose your Library Card, report the loss immediately
to the Services desk (telephone number 8303 5124). Any loans made with
it before it is reported lost will be your responsibility.
Lost Library Cards may be replaced at a cost of $11.00 [includes GST].
- MyLibrary
- Click on the MyLibrary option in the Library Catalogue to find out about your loans, Requests and demerit points.
Borrowing books
- What may I borrow ?
- As an Alumni borrower you may have on loan up to ten items at a time from the Main collection of the Barr Smith Library or from a branch library.
You may not borrow course work books; this includes all short loan and
multiple copy books, and all items in the Reserve and Multimedia
collections.
Alumni members who pay the additional $22 [includes GST] fee may also borrow bound volumes of journals from the Barr Smith Library only.
- Loan periods
- Books from the Main collection may be borrowed for four weeks.
Bound volumes of BSL journals may be borrowed for 24 hours by Alumni
members who have paid the additional fee.
An item on loan to you may be recalled if it is urgently required.
- Borrowing times
- You may borrow until five minutes before the Library closes.
- How to borrow
- Take the book you want to borrow and your Library Card to the Loans
desk, or use a Self-service loans machine in the Barr Smith Library. A receipt will be issued recording details of
the item borrowed and the date on which it is due for return.
You must return the book or renew the loan, on or before the due date.
- Handling charge
- If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and
final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for
the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.
- Renewals
- You may renew the loan of a book from the MyLibrary option on any public access PC in the Library or remotely from home or work.
You may also renew a loan in person at a Loans Desk on or before the due date - or by telephone (telephone number is 8303
5759).
A loan may be renewed up to four times.
A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if
you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.
- Recalls
- If you have already renewed the loan period of an item which is
subsequently requested by another user, or if the book is required for
the Reserve collection, we will ask you to return it immediately.
- Returning books
- Books on loan must be returned to the Barr Smith Library or to any branch library so that the loan can be correctly
discharged.
- Demerit points
- Demerit points are applied when items are not returned by
the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day).
If you acccumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are
withdrawn for fifteen days. You can check how many demerit points you
have accumulated from the MyLibrary option on the Library Catalogue.

- Requests
- If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request' it. This
means that it will be kept for you at the Loans desk when it is
returned, and we'll let you know that it is available.
To Request a book, call up its catalogue entry on the Library Catalogue. Click on Requests and follow the instructions on the screen. Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.
Services
- E-journals and Databases - Access in 2008
- From 13th December 2007 until December 2008, alumni can have **free
online access** on a trial basis to two databases and over 9,000
e-journals, magazines, newspapers, and reports through the University
of Adelaide Library.
Academic Search Alumni edition covers most areas of the sciences, social sciences and humanities.
Business Source Alumni edition covers marketing, management, MIS, accounting, finance, econometrics, economics and more.
What is available?
Complete lists of the journal titles available through these databases [careful - they are large files!]:

Alumni can also access 30 journals from Annual Reviews and another 350 from Project MUSE.
How do I get access?
- Step 1: Review and agree to terms and conditions for access and then register your personal details online
- Step 2: The Library will e-mail you a username and password within three working days
- Step 3: Login here, once you have received your username and password, to access Library E-Resources for Alumni

Other Library E-Resources
Alumni may use the majority of the Library's electronic resources, in
person, through the public access terminals in the University of
Adelaide Libraries. Remote access to electronic resources other than
those listed above is not possible.
- Document delivery
- Alumni members may make use of the University of Adelaide Library Document delivery service.
Library tours
Throughout the year, half-hour tours of the Barr Smith Library are
offered on the first Thursday of the month. A guided tour is an
excellent way for Alumni members to find out about the Library. There
is a maximum of 12 people per group; bookings should be made with Jennifer Osborn (Reference Services).
Restrictions
You may not borrow course work books, material from the Reference
collection, the unbound journals collection, newspapers, items from the
audiovisual collection, and microforms.
You are not entitled to use student login computers in the Library. However, you can use the public access PCs which provide access to the Library catalogue and to library-subscribed electronic resources. Access to MS Office software is not available to Library users other than current students or staff.
Remote access to electronic resources, other than Academic Search Alumni edition and Business Source Alumni edition, is not possible.
Remember !!
- You are responsible for all items you borrow; you will have
to pay for the cost of replacement, plus a non-refundable handling
charge of $30 each, for items that are lost or damaged while they are
on loan to you.
- Items on loan must be returned on or before the due date.
- Please let us know straight away if you change your address.
- If you lose your Library Card, let us know immediately -- you are
responsible for any loans made with it before it is reported lost.
