Borrowing from the Library by staff members
Contents:
- Library card
- Contracted staff members of the University of Adelaide may obtain a Staff ID Card from the University Card Centre, located in the Student Centre. Your ID Card has a Library barcode on it so that it can be used as a Library Card.
Non-contract University staff may obtain a Library Card from Service Enquiries on production of a signed Authorisation for Library Privileges form from their Department. This form may be obtained from Service Enquiries on the North Terrace Campus or from the Loans desk at the Roseworthy Campus and Waite Libraries.
If you lose your Library Card, please report the loss immediately to the University Card Centre (telephone 8303 3363) or to Service Enquiries (telephone 8303 5124) -- you are responsible for all loans made with it.
A Library Card may be used only by the person to whom it was issued.
- MyLibrary
- All University of Adelaide staff members can use MyLibrary to find out about your loans, Requests and demerit points. There's a MyLibrary help page if you would like to know more.
- What and How many
- You may borrow books and bound volumes of journals from the Main collection and items from the Reserve collection.
You may have on loan up to fifty items at one time.
You may also use your ID Card or Library Card at the Law Library, the Elder Music Library, the Roseworthy Campus Library and the Waite Library -- ask the Librarian at these libraries for details of any special conditions that may apply.
- Returning books
- Books on loan must be returned through the chutes at the Library entrance (or at the Exit desk) so that the loan can be correctly discharged.
Books borrowed from the Reserve collection must be returned directly to the Reserve and Multimedia desk.
The chutes at the Library entrance are permanently open for the return of items from loan.
- Loan periods
- The Library varies conditions of loan to meet the needs of particular groups of users, and to maximise the availability of resources. The following loan conditions apply to members of the academic staff:
| Item |
Loan period |
Renewals |
| Main collection book |
10 weeks |
Four |
| Reserve collection item |
3 hours/overnight |
One |
| Journal (bound volumes only) |
24 hours |
One |
An item on loan to you may be recalled if it is urgently required by another user. The loan period will be reduced to seven days and you will be notified of the new due date by email.
The University Librarian may permit a long loan of 52 weeks for items which have been purchased from research funds and which are required for personal research. Application for 52 week loan forms are available at the Loans desk.
Note: Loan periods and conditions may differ at the branch libraries.
- Renewals
- You may renew the loan of a book using MyLibrary on or before the due date.
A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.
- Library notices
- All members of the University of Adelaide community have an email address on the University network to which Library notices will be sent.
If you have an alternative email account you will need to arrange for the forwarding of messages from your University email address to your other email address.
The Library system has to use the official University e-mail database and has no means of changing individual addresses.
- Handling charge
- If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.
- Demerit points
- Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date. For more details, please go to the separate demerit points page.
Please talk to a staff member at Service Enquiries, (telephone 8303 5124) if you have a question about demerit points.
If you are planning to be absent from the University, please check your loans account on MyLibrary and return or renew the loan periods of items that will fall due during your absence. It will help us if you arrange for your mail to be monitored while you are on leave so that Library notices asking for the return of items that are urgently needed by another user, or for the Reserve collection, may be attended to promptly.
