What may I borrow ?

As a Community borrower you may have on loan up to ten books at a time from the Main collection of the Barr Smith Library.

Services

A range of electronic databases and World Wide Web resources is provided through the public access terminals behind the Barr Smith Library Information desk. Remote access to electronic resources is not possible.
Community borrowers may make use of the University of Adelaide Library's Interlibrary loan service.

Restrictions

  • You may not borrow: course work books; material from the Reference collection; journals; newspapers; material from the audiovisual collection; microforms.
  • You are not entitled to use the Student computers service.
  • Remote access to electronic resources is not possible.

Loan periods

Books from the Main collection may be borrowed for four weeks.

An item on loan to you may be recalled if it is urgently required by another user.  The loan period will be reduced to seven days and you will be notified of the new due date by email.

Renewals

You may renew the loan of a book from MyLibrary on or before the due date.

A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.

Returning books

Books on loan must be returned through the chutes at the Library entrance (or at the Exit desk) so that the loan can be correctly discharged.

Demerit points

Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date.

More details about the demerit points scheme are available.

Please talk to a staff member at Service Enquiries if you have a question regarding demerit points.

Library Card

If you lose your Library Card, report the loss immediately to Service Enquiries (telephone 8303 5124). Any loans made with it before it is reported lost will be your responsibility.

Lost Library Cards may be replaced at a cost of $11 [includes GST].
