Demerit points

The demerit point scheme has been devised by the University Library Committee to promote responsible and considerate use of the Libraries and to encourage the fair sharing of library resources.
If items are returned after the due date, then the person who borrowed the item will incur demerit points.

Contents:

How many?
Items borrowed from the collections for normal loan periods, and which are returned after the due date, accumulate demerit points at the rate of two points per day (or part of a day).

Items borrowed on an hourly basis (such as Reserve collection items) are subject to a late return demerit point rate of five points per hour (or part of an hour).

Overdue recalled items accumulate demerit points at the rate of ten points per day (or part of a day).

What is the penalty ?
As soon as an item that you have on loan becomes overdue, demerit points will start accruing to your account.
When your account has accumulated sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are suspended indefinitely until all overdue items are returned.
Demerit points will continue to accrue, and you will be suspended for one week for each lot of sixty points when all overdue items have been returned.

Handling charge
If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00.
Once an invoice has been raised no more demerit points will accrue for the non-return of the item.

Check your own
You can check your demerit points by logging on to the MyLibrary option of the Library Catalogue.

Email overdue notices
All members of the University community have an email address on the University network to which Library notices will be sent.
If you have an alternative email account you will need to arrange for the forwarding of messages from your University email address to your other email address.

How to avoid demerit points
The simplest (and absolutely guaranteed) way to avoid accruing demerit points is to return material that you have borrowed from the Library either on or before the due date, or to arrange a renewal of the loan period.

Queries?
The majority of Library users manage to avoid suspension of their borrowing privileges. If you have a question about demerit points or if you have been suspended but wish special circumstances to be taken into account, please talk to a Library staff member:
