Understanding MyLibrary
Contents:
- What is MyLibrary?
- MyLibrary provides access to your personal information on the Library's catalogue system: items on loan, requests you have made; demerit points you have accrued or fees you may have incurred, and so on.
Other functions of MyLibrary include the ability to: set preferences for how you would like to search the Catalogue; save Catalogue records to a Bookbag; save search strategies to run again in a subsequent Catalogue session.
- Logging in to MyLibrary
- Just click on the MyLibrary option in the navigation bar at the top (and the bottom) of the Library Catalogue screen.
You will need to login using your University ID and password or library barcode and last name:
- Personal information
- Your name and address is listed in MyLibrary under the heading Personal Information. This information is downloaded to MyLibrary from University or Library records.
If students need to make changes to your personal details you must login to Access Adelaide, or you can notify the Student Centre, Lower Level, Wills Building, North Terrace Campus (opposite the Post Office).
The Library is not able to make changes to your personal details if you are a current student or staff member.
- Items on loan
- MyLibrary will display what items you have on loan and when they are due for return:
- Renewing a loan
- You have the option of renewing the loan period of a book that you wish to keep longer. But please note: you can't renew a loan if somebody is waiting to read the book, or you have already renewed it for the maximum number times (usually 4 for students and staff of the University). To renew an item, click on the box to the left of the record in the column headed Renew?, then click the Renew Items button.
- Requests
- If an item you want to borrow is on loan you can place a Request for it. The item will be held for you when it is returned from loan.
You can monitor the progress of your requests through your MyLibrary account. When you have requested an item the details will be shown under Requests Pending:
When the item is returned from loan we'll send you an email telling you that it is waiting for you to collect. Your MyLibrary account will also show you that the item is now available:
- Demerit points
- Demerit points are applied if you do not return by the due date an item that you have borrowed. Your MyLibrary account will show you the details:

- Suspension from borrowing
- If you accrue more than 60 points you will be suspended from borrowing for 7 days. A note will appear on the Personal information section of MyLibrary:
and the full details will be listed under the Demerit points heading:
If you need help to interpret your demerit points information, please ask at Service Enquiries at the Barr Smith Library (library-services@adelaide.edu.au) or at the Library desk in the Branch libraries.
For more information about demerit points, please go to the separate Demerit points page.
Remember! The simplest way to avoid accruing demerit points is to either return material to any University of Adelaide library (Barr Smith or branch library) or to renew the loan period, on or before the due date.
- Preferences
- If you click on the Preferences button you will be able to set personal preferences which will apply to your future use of the Library Catalogue. You can arrange for the Catalogue to open with your favourite search option, for example, and set the number of records per page you wish to be displayed.
- Bookbag
- The Bookbag facility on MyLibrary allows you to store up to 1000 Catalogue records. You can add records over any number of catalogue sessions and from any computer in any location. Save a record by clicking on the Save to Bookbag button which is available in the Print/Save options section of all search results screens.
When you are logged in to MyLibrary you can view the contents of the records you have saved to your Bookbag, click on an item to connect to the catalogue record, see the date the item was saved to your Bookbag, delete individual records (or the whole Bookbag) or you may print or email the stored records.
Please note: You should login to MyLibrary before you start using the Bookbag facility.
- Saved searches
- You can save a search strategy to your MyLibrary account so that you can run the same search again in a subsequent catalogue session. Do this by using the Save Search Query button which is available in the Print/Save options section of all search results screens.
You can save a number of searches in this way and access them through your MyLibrary account. If any new items matching your search terms have been added to the Catalogue since you last ran the search they will be picked up when you run it again.
Please note: You should login to MyLibrary before you start using the Saved search facility.
