Library services for Year 12 students

The University of Adelaide Library provides access to resources to support teaching, learning and research at a tertiary (university) level.

During Year 12 many students discover that they need access to a level of material that school libraries and public libraries don't always hold. Although members of the public can generally use the University of Adelaide Library, there are added benefits for students whose schools sign up for the Library's Year 12 Programme.

Participating Year 12 students will be provided with borrowing priviliges and basic instruction in Library use and procedures. Most of this activity will take place at the Barr Smith Library, which is centrally located on our North Terrace campus.

There is a separate scheme for University Senior College and Bradford College students.

Contents:

Public access to the Barr Smith Library

All members of the public, including secondary students, are able to:

  • use the collections
  • make photocopies
  • use the Library's website with its Catalogue access and links
  • use free resources which are included in web-based subject guides

but may not:

  • borrow material
  • use limited licence databases and other electronic resources

Some electronic resources are available on a walk-in basis to all members of the public. This service will be available only by visiting the Library: remote access to these resources will not be possible.

Location: how to find the Barr Smith Library

The Barr Smith Library is centrally located on the University of Adelaide's North Terrace Campus.

Not sure how to find us? Just look for location F 8 on this North Terrace Campus map.

Still not sure? Here's a smaller size campus map that puts us a bit more into context.

Introduction to the Library

Schools are asked to contact Lucy Zuzolo [e-mail: mailto:lucy.zuzolo@adelaide.edu.au] or telephone: 8313 1060 to arrange for groups of students to visit and learn about the Library and its services, and to register. These sessions will be offered from March each year.

Please allow about 90 mins. for students to be introduced to the Library, to familiarise themselves with the Library building, and to collect their Library Cards.
Schools running Year 11-12 programmes (e.g. IB) may prefer October - October membership arrangements; please contact Lucy for further information.

Reference assistance

Assistance will be provided from the Library's Research Help desk - including help with the Library catalogue, describing the use of reference tools, assistance with electronic resources, finding books in the library, etc.

Registration for borrowing

Registration for borrowing will take place in groups, when students come for their introduction to the Library session.
N.B.: Individual, walk-in registrations will not be possible.

Cost

The cost of registration is $27.50 (includes GST) per student. This allows borrowing until the end of  October of current year.  A 12 month membership (October - October of following year) is $55.00 (includes GST) per student.
An invoice for the appropriate amount will be issued on the day and should be paid by the school on the day of registration.

Registration is free for students from eligible schools under the Fairway Scheme.

No further charge will be made for borrowing or use of other resources, but printing and photocopying are charged for and require the purchase of a COPY CARD.

Opening hours

Library opening hours are generous and well suited to students studying out of school hours. During the university year we are open from 8am to 10pm Monday - Thursday, 8am to 6pm on Fridays, and 1-5pm on weekends. Opening hours are reduced during the mid-semester, mid-year and summer breaks. There are opportunities for research/study in the April, July and September school holidays.

Borrowing

Once registered, Year 12 students will be able to borrow from the Library collection, but there may be special conditions applying to some parts of the collection - e.g. you may not  borrow journals, or other materials with "in library use only".

Branch libraries may also have local restrictions.

How many? and for how long?

Students may have a maximum of 10 books on loan at one time.
The standard loan period is 4 weeks with renewals if nobody is waiting to use the book.

Loan periods are strictly enforced.  Books must be returned on time to avoid demerit points and other penalties.

Borrowing rules

Strict rules apply to borrowing and returning books. Schools will be expected to indemnify their borrowers for the replacement costs, including a non-refundable handling fee of $30 per item, of any lost or damaged material.

Resources
