A man of many parts: William Blackstone and the English Enlightenment
The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library invite you to a free public talk with Professor Wilf Prest.
Thursday 22 November 2007 at 1.05pm
Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide
Discover William Blackstone and his books.
Blackstone is best known today for his Commentaries on the Laws of England, first published in four volumes between 1765-69 and continuously in print thereafter.
But besides writing the most influential law book in the English language, Blackstone had a remarkably wide range of extra-legal interests and accomplishments: architectural, bibliographical, historical, literary, and political, among others. This talk will touch lightly on some aspects of these polymathic activities, illustrated by rare items from the collections of the University's Barr Smith Library and John Salmond Law Library.
