Joyce Cary: a varied life
The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library invite you to a free public talk on
Thursday 29 March 2007 at 1.05pm
Ira Raymond Exhibition Room,
Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide
On the 50th anniversary of his father's death, and in association with an exhibition of rare items, Tristram Cary will talk about Joyce Cary's life as an adventurer, a writer, and an artist. He will also discuss aspects of his father's works and the Cary family history, and will share personal memories of family life.
Joyce Cary's most celebrated work is the trilogy of novels devoted to the raffish, Blakean artist Gulley Jimson and his circle: Herself Surprised (1941), To Be A Pilgrim (1942) and The Horse's Mouth (1944).
The Barr Smith Library has a large collection of books by Joyce Cary, including a number of rare items that are kept in Special Collections, as well as critical works on Joyce Cary's work.
The exhibition, Joyce Cary 1888-1957: Retrospective on the 50th anniversary of his death, featuring first editions, artworks, photographs and memorabilia from the private collection of Tristram Cary, will be on display in the Barr Smith Library entrance foyer from 14 March to 11 May 2007.
