Maureen Prichard: Christine Macgregor: The Hidden Benefactor
The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library invite you to a free public talk with Maureen Prichard on Thursday 23 September 2010 at 1.05pm.
Venue: Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr Smith Library, University of Adelaide
Christine Macgregor was a South Australian who amassed a collection of nearly 5,000 books, all of which (except one) she bequeathed to the Barr Smith Library. Among these books are a few hundred volumes which exemplify the spirit of William Morris's 'ideal book' and the history of the Private Press Movement; they also comprise a significant legacy to our state.
This talk will answer the questions:
- Who was Christine Macgregor?
- What, indeed, is the significance of her legacy?
Maureen Prichard gained her PhD from the University of South Australia with her thesis Such Endless Pleasure: The Illustrated Private Press Books of Christine Margaret Macgregor.
A version of the Introduction to her thesis was published as 'Christine Macgregor's Illustrated Private Press Books'. BSANZ Bulletin vol. 27, 2003, pp. 34-47.
Maureen has designed and illustrated many books, including Tim Winton's only picture book, Jesse (1988).
She is Principal Lecturer in Visual Arts at TAFE SA's Adelaide College of the Arts (formerly Adelaide Centre for the Arts).
