Computers in the Library
Student computers

Most computers in the Barr Smith Library are configured to provide online services to University of Adelaide students and staff members. They are maintained by the University's Information Technology Services [ITS].
There is a separate page describing the 24 hour access computers located in the Library.
The student computers enable access to the University's web site including the Library Catalogue and to the Library's wide range of online resources as well as to the University's online teaching and learning resources such as MyUni. They also allow email access, access to the student file server and use of a suite of desktop applications such as Microsoft Office.
Desktop applications
All student computers have these common applications loaded. Student computers in the Library also have these additional applications. The 24hr access computers are configured as Science PCs with additional specific science applications.
Internet access quota
Full details are on the Access and use of the Internet page of the University website.
You should always remember to logout from your session when you have finished using a student login computer; if you leave the computer logged in to your account another user may download material against your Internet access quota.
Public access computers

Some computers in the Library are configured as public access computers which do not require a login or password. They provide access to most of the Library's online resources but not to ISP email or to all Internet sites. Desktop applications such as MS Office is not available.
Public access computers are located throughout the Library building, generally near the main stairs.
These machines have an identifying label on the hard drive in the format BSLPBxxxx.
Non-networked database computers
There are five computers that are configured to provide access to individual, stand-alone databases that cannot be made available through the University network. They are located in the Barr Smith Library Reserve and Multimedia area on Level 3 South.
Printing
All student login computers use printers which operate the University student print quota system. Printing from public access PCs is only available using the Copycard printer on level 3 south, at the top of the main stairs. Full details are on our web page Photocopying and printing in the Library.
Scanning material
Two of the student computers in the southwest corner of Barr Smith Library Level 3 have a scanner attached. There is no charge for this service.
There is a separate page on How to use the scanner.
The Library's Special Collections also has a Scanning service for material from these collections.
Wireless (wifi) access in the Barr Smith Library
Wireless coverage in the Barr Smith Library is available throughout the building and most recent laptops will be able to connect.
IT student support is available (9am - 5pm, weekdays) from the Barr Smith Library Research Help desk, particularly with configuration of laptops to the wireless network.

The University has a web page showing live usage of all Computer labs. Library computers are listed under BSL.
