Adelaide Writer's Week was established in 1960 as a central part of the Adelaide Festival, 'a festival within a festival devoted specifically to literature, to the problems and issues facing writers, and to the readers themselves'.

Dr Beate Josephi was born in Wiesbaden, West Germany and emigrated to Australia in 1974. She was appointed a member of the Writers' Week Committee for the 1982-88 Festivals and was Chairman of the Committee in 1986-88.  She works as a writer, translator, and radio producer, as well as serving on a number of Australian cultural advisory bodies.

These papers were deposited by Prof. Wilfrid  Prest on behalf of  Dr. Josephi in 2001.  They comprise a collection of programmes, speeches, reports and reviews,  background information on writers, radio 5UV writers' profiles, posters, minutes of the Writers' Week 1986 meetings; and correspondence.
