Membership

  • University of Adelaide College students and University Senior College students are automatically members of the Library. Read more about borrowing
  • If you're a Casual staff member or a Visitor (i.e. contractor, visiting academic, volunteer) and you don't have a University ID card, register for Access to IT Services to get library online resources. To borrow from the library, register for a casual library card
  • If you’re a retired staff member with 10 or more years at the University of Adelaide you can apply for Library membership.  Applications need to be made within the first year of retirement

    Alumni
    • All University of Adelaide graduates can become members of the Library
    • If you are not already a member of the Alumni community join up to receive your Alumni membership card, publications and more
    • Choose between a free Online resources only membership, or an Online resources and borrowing membership for an annual fee

    Online resources only (free)

    This membership is free and gives Alumni members access to a large and growing selection of online resources, including journals, eBooks, magazines and newspapers.

    Off-campus access is available to a wide range of online resources, however not all resources are available due to license restrictions.

    Online resources and borrowing (annual fee)

    This membership allows Alumni to borrow Library items and access online resources. You can borrow up to 50 items (and the initial loan time is 10 weeks).

    Membership costs $55 per year and you must be a South Australian resident. The first year is free for new graduates who register within one year of graduation.

    When your Library card is ready to be picked up you will receive an email. Please bring proof of ID and South Australian residence.

    Which online books, journals and databases are included with alumni membership?

    Alumni membership gives you access to a range of the University Library's online resources. Alumni members have access to over 20,000 online journals, magazines and newspapers, and over 12,000 eBooks. Please note that some of the journals have publisher-imposed embargo periods.

    • Academic Search Alumni - covers 3000 journals in most areas of the sciences, social sciences and humanities.
    • Business Source Alumni - covers 6200 journals and 1,700 ebooks in marketing, management, accounting, finance, econometrics, economics and more.
    • Annual Reviews - review articles in many areas of academic enquiry.
    • CSIRO Journals - important Australian research reports in agriculture, biological and health sciences
    • CSIRO eBook Collection - covers a wide range of disciplines including plant and animal sciences, farming, urban development and environmental management.
    • Oxford English Dictionary - the most authoritative and complete dictionary of the English language
    • Oxford Academic - 200 high quality research journals covering a broad range of subjects
    • PressReader - Cover-to-cover presentation online of the print versions of over 1100 newspapers from around the world. Backfile is 30 days. 
    • Project MUSE - over 300 top humanities and social sciences journals from US university presses.
    • OECD iLibrary - includes everything published by the OECD (books, journals, series, working papers, databases) on subjects as diverse as general economy, statistics, agriculture, science, future studies and the environment. 
    • Sage Complete - more than 1000 journals spanning the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, and Medicine, and more than 400 are published on behalf of learned societies and institutions.
    • SpringerLink - Springer is the second-largest journal publisher worldwide, with over 1200 journals and 3 million articles available.
    • Taylor & Francis Journals - T&F are among the largest journal publishers in the world. 
  • Flinders and University of South Australia (Reciprocal borrowing)

    • Staff and students from the University of South Australia and Flinders University may borrow from the University of Adelaide Library. Books cannot be transferred between libraries, and must be returned to the library they were borrowed from
    • To borrow from the University of Adelaide Library, bring in your institution ID card and register with Ask Library

      • PIRSA/SARDI staff can sign up for a Library ID card to access the Library. To register, either email or visit any of the Library branches and include the following:
      • a completed Waite Affiliated form ; and
        • Proof of employment with PIRSA/SARDI (eg payslip or ID card)
        • OR A letter of offer of employment stating contract expiry date
        • OR A letter on letterhead requesting membership, giving name, dept. and address, email address, phone number and term of employment

      • Schools can register for the Library’s Year 12 Programme. School groups can arrange for a tour, and year 12 students can sign up for Library cards to start borrowing
      • Signing up for membership can only be organised through your school and as part of a school group
      • A 6 month membership costs $27.50
      • A 12 month membership costs $55.00
      • Registration is free for students from eligible schools under the Universities Equity Scheme

      • Commercial and government organisations, secondary education and not-for-profit organisations may apply for Institutional membership at the University Library. Institutional membership is subject to criteria and is offered at the discretion of the University Library
      • Annual membership is $275 via the online shop
