Reciprocal Borrowing

Under the reciprocal borrowing scheme, students and staff members of the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia and Flinders University are automatically entitled to borrow from the other two university libraries.

Please note books should always be returned to the Library from which you borrowed them.

Information for University of South Australia and Flinders University Users

Please register for a reciprocal borrowing card at Ask Library.

University of South Australia and Flinders University users may borrow Barr Smith Library Main collection, High Use Collection and Reserve books (Barr Smith only).  Journals may not be borrowed. Minor variations may apply in the branch libraries.

You may have a maximum of twenty items on loan at one time. The loan period is four weeks. An item on loan to you may be recalled if it is urgently required by another user.  The loan period will be reduced to seven days and you will be notified of the new due date by email.

Loans will be automatically renewed up to the maximum loan period of 20 weeks. A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.

Information for University of Adelaide users

You should become familiar with the rules and conditions of use of the libraries you plan to use.

University of South Australia: Borrowing Rules

The main points to note are:

  • Current students and staff members are entitled to borrow books from the University of South Australia, with the exception of Foundation Course students.
  • You may borrow up to twenty items for two weeks with four renewals if the item is not required by another user.
  • You may not borrow journals, special collections and audiovisual hardware.
  • Overdue fines apply.
  • Overdue items will be invoiced for replacement costs including a non refundable handling charge at 14 days overdue.  Under the terms of the reciprocal agreement, this will suspend your local borrowing privileges until the invoice is resolved with University of South Australia.

Flinders University: Borrowing Rules

The main points to note are:

  • You may borrow up to twenty items for four weeks with four renewals if the item is not required by another user.
  • You may not borrow journals.
  • Demerit points are allocated when books are not returned by the due date at the rate of two per day. If you accumulate more than 60 demerit points you will be excluded from the reciprocal borrowing scheme, and also from your 'home' university library, for fifteen days.
