Briony Hoare

Bachelor of Agriculture (Oenology) (1997)

A degree in Agricultural Science at the University of Adelaide helped Briony Hoare pursue her passion for winemaking. As the Young Winemaker of the Year for 2003, she is now making the world passionate about Australian wines.

Briony Hoare's passion for making great wine saw her recognised by the Australian Wine Society as the 2003 Young Winemaker of the Year.

Her first interest in winemaking came during a trip to the Barossa Valley as a 15-year-old. In 1997, she completed a Degree in Agricultural Science (majoring in Oenology) at the University of Adelaide.

Since then she has worked for Southcorp in all of Australia's major winemaking regions, and has also worked in Italy.

In 2001 Briony joined one of Australia's most prestigious and successful wine companies Rosemount Estate, as one of four people in its McLaren Vale winemaking team.

"I wouldn't be where I am today without the University of Adelaide," she says. "Studying winemaking gave me the skills and knowledge I need to do the thing I love.

"I love winemaking because I get to create something that's an assault on the senses, through the colour, smell and texture of wine.

"Making wine from a raw product is a great experience, but knowing that what you make is purely to create enjoyment and pleasure for other people is even better."
