Sarah Callaghan
Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (2003)
As a law student at the University of Adelaide, Sarah Callaghan had the chance to work with the United Nations in Cairo. As a UN Intern, she put her theory into practice by helping refugees rebuild their lives. Sarah Callaghan's three-month internship with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Cairo allowed her to apply her theoretical knowledge of the law to practical effect.
"This was an exceptional opportunity to use my knowledge and skills to assist refugees rebuild their lives destroyed by war," she said.
After graduating in December 2003 with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), Sarah is a Ministerial Liaison Officer to the Attorney-General in the South Australian Government, but keen to return to Africa to continue her work with refugee groups.
"The experience enabled me to crystallise my ideas about the kind of work I want to do," she said.
"I enjoyed working with a leading human rights organisation while the internship put the Australian refugee issue into a broader international context."
