Message from the Vice-Chancellor

The University of Adelaide is situated in the heart of traditional Kaurna country, an acknowledgement I make at the start of every public speech. Indigenous people of the Adelaide Plains occupied this land for many thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans.

In the University's 133-year history, this recognition has only formally been embedded in our constitution since July 8, 2003 when the historic Reconciliation Statement was signed. Since then, we have underlined that commitment with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment Strategy to address the under-representation of Indigenous people within the University.

Across all our campuses, collaborative research is being undertaken on Aboriginal health, music, languages, native title claims and heritage issues. This edition's cover story illustrates the progress we have made to date, while still accepting we have a long way to go.

The Summer 2007 issue of Lumen once again recognises the achievements of our graduates in a wide range of fields, each making a significant impact in their respective careers.

Dr Steffen Creaser and Dr Tania Crotti are both making their mark in the intellectual hub of Boston, working on breakthroughs for an ageing population affected by two of the world's most serious health problems - Alzheimer's and bone degeneration.

But our graduates' impact is not confined to scientific research. Entrepreneur Drew Kluska, who operates one of Australia's most innovative travel businesses, is offering customers the holiday of a lifetime - into outer space. And Reserve Bank economist Dr Guy Debelle is putting his degree to good use, managing Australia's foreign exchange reserves.

This edition also commemorates historic milestones, paying tribute to On Dit's 75th birthday and the 50th anniversary of Architecture at the University of Adelaide, as well as the launch of a new and exciting era in our alumni relations.

I hope your enjoy your Summer issue.
