Recognising Excellence

Each year the Development and Alumni office recognises the significant achievements and contributions of its alumni and friends through a variety of awards and grants.

Distinguished Alumni Award

The Development and Alumni office formally recognises the University's outstanding alumni by bestowing up to three Distinguished Alumni Awards annually. These awards recognise outstanding service to the University of Adelaide and outstanding service to the community or outstanding contribution in their chosen fields.

The recipients of the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Awards were:

Ms Beryl Kimber OBE for her sustained and distinguished service in the Performing Arts, both nationally and internationally, as one of Australia's leading violinists and pedagogues, as well as with her continued contact with and support of the Elder Conservatorium of the University of Adelaide over many years; Mr Clemens Leske AM for his sustained and outstanding service to the Elder Conservatorium of the University of Adelaide over many years, as well as his distinguished national and international profile as a pianist.

The Honours Alumni University Medal

The Honours Alumni University Medal for 2007 has been awarded to James Daniell. This award acknowledges outstanding academic excellence and only one medal is granted each year to the most outstanding honours student in that graduating year.

James graduated with First Class Honours in a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Structural) degree and a Bachelor of Science at the end of 2006 following an undergraduate career with excellent grades in all engineering and science courses.

The institution that James has nominated for his higher degree study is outstanding - arguably the best in the world for the cross-disciplinary treatment of earthquake engineering and engineering seismology.

The European School for Advanced Studies in Reduction of Seismic Risk (ROSE School) at the University of Pavia in northern Italy is unique in that internationally renowned academics are flown in from all around the world to deliver the Masters course subjects in an intensive teaching mode over three or four-week blocks.

Mutual Community Postgraduate Travel Grants and the AUGU/RC Heddle Award

These grants support the research undertaken by doctoral candidates. Recipients are provided with funding to travel to a conference or research institution essential to the advancement of their research.

The first round recipients of the 2007 Mutual Community Postgraduate Travel Grants were Ms Emily Steele (Public Health) and Mrs Xiaoxia (Sunny) Yin (Electrical and Electronic Engineering).

The second round recipients were Ms Joanne Dollard (General Practice) and Mr Martin Sale (Physiology).

Miss Siobhan Schabrun (Physiology) is the 2007 AUGU / RC Heddle Award recipient.

The Mutual Community Postgraduate Travel Grants are made possible through the generosity of Mutual Community health insurance providers and in particular Mr Eric Granger, State Manager SA. The AUGU/RC Heddle Award celebrates the memory of Dr Robert Heddle, past President of the Adelaide University Graduates Union, in honour of his significant contribution to the Graduates Union and the greater University of Adelaide community.
