MLC Resources for CONSTRUCTION I

This page contains various resources for the University of Adelaide course "Construction I" in the Bachelor of Design Studies. To find out more about this course, please search for it in the Course Information.

Mathematical background knowledge for construction

In this course, ou learn about how built structures behave under pressure so that you have a greater understanding of how to construct safe and functional structures. This means there is quite a bit of physics to learn, which involves formulas and geometry. Below are some resources to help you become more familiar with these mathematical skills and concepts.

Scientific notation

Many measurements in physics are written in scientific notation (for example, with a "x109"). The following resources will help revise this notation and how it works:

Unit conversion

Most measurements in Architecture are in millimetres (mm), but most measurements in Physics are in metres (m). It's important to know how to convert from one to the other. The following video describes how the system works.

Solving equations and formulas

Physics tends to have lots of equations and formulas. The following topics from the MathsBridge contain practice questions and explanations to help with this.

Perimeter, Area, Volume

It is important to know how to calculate various areas, perimeters, circumferences and volumes in Architecture. The following MathsBridge topic is about these sorts of calculations:

Triangles and Trigonometry

As well as calculating various lengths and areas, it is important to be able to make calculations using the angles and lengths in a triangle. This practice is called "trigonometry" and includes pythagoras' theorem. The following resources might be helpful:
