We will sponsor students residing outside South Australia to visit the School of Molecular and Biomedical Science (SMBS) for 3 nights between 22 and 25 July 2009. You will learn about our PhD programs and scholarships, speak to potential supervisors, find out about accommodation and living in Adelaide and sample our fantastic lifestyle!

Visiting scholars will receive:

  • Return airfare to Adelaide from an Australian or New Zealand capital city
  • 3 night’s accommodation in Adelaide (but you can stay longer at your own expense if you wish)
  • Participation in postgraduate information activities including:
    • Tours of the School
    • Information about the University of Adelaide and PhD scholarship opportunities
    • Information about the School’s PhD programs and support for PhD students
    • Laboratory visits and discussion of research opportunities with potential supervisors offering PhD projects in your areas of interest
    • Meetings and social interaction with current PhD students
    • Attendance at the SMBS Postgraduate Research Symposium
    • Information about life and living in Adelaide with opportunities to sample it!

A schedule of activities for your visit is available here.

Visiting scholars are eligible for University and School postgraduate scholarships, which provide a tax free income of $20,427 (in 2009) for up to 3 years of PhD study. Over the last 5 years all RTS-eligible students (click here for an explanation) accepted into a PhD program in the SMBS have been awarded a scholarship that provides this tax-free income and full remission of tuition fees. For scholarship information click here (and you are welcome to email Jennifer Peters or Michael Lardelli for more information - see below). For information about admission to a PhD program in the School, click here.

Visiting scholars who are awarded an Australian Postgraduate Award (or equivalent full scholarship) and subsequently enrol for a PhD in our School will receive a relocation allowance of $3,000 from the School, in addition to any relocation allowance attached to their scholarship.

PhD students in the School receive travel funds to present at conferences and are eligible for a scholarship providing two months support after submission of the thesis to write up papers for publication (the standard scholarships cease upon submission of the thesis). See here for details. Students also receive additional travel funds for papers published before thesis submission.

Research areas

The School offers PhD programs in Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology & Immunology, and Physiology. For more details on the research conducted within the School, go to here

The postgraduate coordinators of the various disciplines can also advise on research opportunities within the School that may be of interest to you. For their contact details, go here.

You are invited to attend our Postgraduate Research Symposium

The SMBS Postgraduate Research Symposium will be held on Friday 24 July and will feature short presentations by all of the School’s postgraduate students in their second and third year of research as well as information on postdoctoral careers etc.. This is a student-organised event and is a great opportunity to see the range of research that our School does as well as to socialise.
